It might well have to do with haptic feedback, or could just be a cool new differentiation aspect. I'd be happy either way.

From Nokia Conversations:

It can lead to us developing new, market-leading products: the first GSM phone, the first GPRS phone, the first smartphone, the first cameraphone, the first mobile phone with a QWERTY keyboard, the first phone with video calling and the first – wait and see…
Edit:

And another one about solar charging build into the phone. That would be disruptive, don't you think?

It just hit me that this is kind of on the same realm as the 2007 sweet Aeon concept.
As a side note, make that happen Nokia.

Thumbs up for the convex screen. Fingers down throat for the lame iphonesque 'It's just a grid of bloody shortcuts!' homescreen.

One of my fave things about Maemo 5 is the fully configurable homescreens, sigh. Such a step backwards.

zeh@his blog

Besonders auffällig ist hierbei der Touchscreen, wie wir bereits im Artikel von vor zwei Wochen andeuteten. Die genaue Funktion erfahrt ihr morgen.

thats possible, but apple would have problems producing it without an antenna problem...
and they can only make 1 color... no themes to change the style of ui or somethign like that

the curved screen could be good to have less reflections in the sun (like nexus s)... or because its needed for haptikos
