There is huge difference between "free" and "open source". For "open source" program, game or whatever, we can port it using much less resources/money, than for paying Myriad or any other "bastard". About "free" (closed source), we're not interested in. If someone is, go ahead and convince/pay Myriad to do it, but don't involve Open Source Community into it At least, until they release everything as Open Source

So, what is your proposal?

most games that can be played in Wine are available (usually with better features ) as open sources versions in Linux/GNU.

the games that require DirectX do not run well (if @ all) under Wine.

thus your comparison is not really applicable.
if you want to play those games under Linux/GNU, you have to buy an emulator like CrossOver.

I get your point, but Rms would not agree about term you've used for closed source(free). "Open source" is term reshaped by industry.

My point is that Myriad Alien Dalvik enables to run Android apps (probably not all) in Maemo as same as Wine enables to run some Windows apps in Linux.
Also I think that many N900 users are prepared to pay for this add-on (app) one way or the other (as individuals or as community). If we try to contact Myriad as individuals (unorganized), they probably won't even reply to our emails. But if we contact them as community, maybe they will hear our voice.

WINE is Open Source. Alien Dalvik is not. Case closed

If You think Myriad can be convinced to release Alien Dalvik for Maemo for free, go ahead - You got blessing of Community. Still, You'll be successful, if they even answer to You with "no, thanks".

Opened or closed, it doesn't matter, because conversation was about their similar capabilities, not about their source. And if Alien Dalvik would be opened, we wouldn't have this conversation at all, because we would already use it.

EDIT:
Alien Dalvik could significantly prolong life of our device, OS and this community, so I think that this question should concern us all.
We are losing members mostly due to lack of applications and updates.

I think that if we're really loosing members, it's due to somehow lack of devices, and Android on it's own if of less and less interest for N900 users. Anyway, we can agree to disagree here.

well, there is a completely open solution to your wish... NITDroid.
take it or leave it
funny thing is that the only platform on which Alien Dalvik has been spotted so far... is Maemo
alas, only in the ads of Myriad

i doubt many do have more knowledge of dalvik stuff on the N900 then e-yes, but he never seemed to have bothered about it.
maybe you should contact & ask him about it?

Could Council kindly ask Reggie to include some sort of spambot protection in our vBulletin instance? It's starting to become really serious problem.
