OK, here I have one dumb comparison.
I have PC with installed Ubuntu and my cousin likes to play this free game very much, but unfortunately the game is developed just for Windows. I don't have Windows license, nor I like idea about dual booting too much (with NITdroid we can't make phone calls, we can't use GPS, switching between OSes drains battery etc.). So, what is your proposal?

There is huge difference between "free" and "open source". For "open source" program, game or whatever, we can port it using much less resources/money, than for paying Myriad or any other "bastard". About "free" (closed source), we're not interested in. If someone is, go ahead and convince/pay Myriad to do it, but don't involve Open Source Community into it At least, until they release everything as Open Source

most games that can be played in Wine are available (usually with better features ) as open sources versions in Linux/GNU.
the games that require DirectX do not run well (if @ all) under Wine.
thus your comparison is not really applicable.
if you want to play those games under Linux/GNU, you have to buy an emulator like CrossOver.

My point is that Myriad Alien Dalvik enables to run Android apps (probably not all) in Maemo as same as Wine enables to run some Windows apps in Linux.
Also I think that many N900 users are prepared to pay for this add-on (app) one way or the other (as individuals or as community). If we try to contact Myriad as individuals (unorganized), they probably won't even reply to our emails. But if we contact them as community, maybe they will hear our voice.

WINE is Open Source. Alien Dalvik is not. Case closed
If You think Myriad can be convinced to release Alien Dalvik for Maemo for free, go ahead - You got blessing of Community. Still, You'll be successful, if they even answer to You with "no, thanks".
