What is backwards, then?

Taking just the recent political events on both sides of the pond, it is clear that reversing what has been done in the past few decades is "forwards" according to some people and "backwards" according to others.

I know some people who claim that we moved "backwards" since the Middle Ages because we moved away from their favourite deity and their favourite particular way of worshiping it.

In short, there is no objective measure.

I guess we are looking forwards to going backwards.
Although we're probably just going in circles, or better yet, a downwards spiral...

Shiftless, believing others will fix the problems we have on the planet, or shrugging and apathetically doing nothing believing it pointless,
we more arrogant in our assumptions of how "better" we are and how "better" things are, and how much more advanced we are.
we are better at cruelty and emotional detachment.
We are better at more efficiently refining the process of stripping this planet bare, of making useless garbage that is choking this place.

Or the world would not be in the shape its in.

There are good folks, lots and lots.
But they / we are a drop in the ocean of the rest of humanity which is comprised of the thoughtless, slothful, selfish, greedy, vain, violent and downright criminal.

I can't even call it turning full circle as with the "forward is backward ..backward is forward" conversation ..
We are way past that kind of conversation.
No apocalyptic "possibilities" or theories now...
We can't take care of each other, or the wildlife or this place..
and it is past apparent now.

how the Polar Vortex treating you?
Getting some Canadian summer weather down there eh?


Sadly I can't join in the fun...like I used to when I lived back east...
We have had the flowers coming up since the beginning of January (which is usual...) and nice weather...all winter so far...
(actually I consider a year on the coast to be a lengthy and protracted summer, followed usually by a few months of rain with intermittent snow the very rare time ...)

Ha ha! Couldn't be better! Always enjoy the change of seasons and an occasional polar vortex or two!

Yea I grew up in the quintessential Nord ..
outdoor is the place to be..if not by a fire..
from before I can recall until I was 30 ...every winter it was daily before and after school, weekends, holidays and snow days...
skating rinks on ponds with a old wooden chair in the center, hot choc in thermoses, layers of mitts crusted over in compacted snow, toboggan outings, ice fishing, skidooing, cross country skiing by moonlight over surreal monochromatic fields and hills that looked flat and 2D to the point one could not tell if it was a flat, a hill, or a valley in front of you, snowshoeing through the trees so quiet and still except for the chickadees and whisky-jacks cavorting about upside down around you, the odd jack rabbit, deer, either in front of you or their tracks left behind...hauling and chopping firewood for the wood stove (which I still do at my place) and the smell hanging in the outdoor air, shovelling the lane so by the time one was done, inside and just warmed up, the lane was filled once again, and a few storms in my youth, last of the bad ones, snow as high as the telephone poles, higher than the second story's of most farm houses, nasty nasty that...
I miss it now and then...
But the winters of my youth are not the winters of today...
more oft back east the winter is little snow on the ground as insulation and hence little fun, and either damp weather or bitter due to the lack of snow cover...or they are simply buried.
the balance is way out on the seasons back east.
That was why I moved out to the coast 20 years ago.
The weather was just too erratic to enjoy any more.

out here I still snowshoe, and cross country ski and toboggan ...but have to go up mountain for that...not just outside the back door.
It isn't far...about an hour away to the nearest snow capped top.
but ...
hiking and boating and swimming (in the summer of course) is the thing to do out here on the coast..

I spoke...and behold Murphy strikes me down the same day.
Our national forecasters are calling for an arm of the polar vortex to stretch down over most of B.C. here...
including the coast.
We are to begin with temp drops and snow (possibly even at sea level ...meaning even mild and moderate Gabriola potentially is going to get blanketed in snow by Sunday...
(never lasts long here so it will be a nice diversion.)
