I've been using FreOffice from extras-devel for the last 2 days since 1.2 release and it has been working great so far. Note, they are viewers only. Word docs are not rendered perfectly, but good enough to read the contents. Also, the excel viewer has some sort of bugs which does not allow navigating cells.

Overall the experience is pretty satisfactory.

Nevermind my last comment, I did not realize you want to *create* documents.

You can install AbiWord and Gnumeric from the devel repo. Light and fast equivalents of Word and Excel.

Agreed, using Easy Debian gives you access to Open Office 3.1. The UI isn't optimized for small screens, but I find it usable.

It takes some time to install Easy Debian, but once you have it set up you get access to so many programs.

For me, Open Office is just too slow. Once you have either your new or old document loaded it works fine, but the wait for open office to start followed by the lag in creating a new document / opening a saved document just makes it impractical.

I know its not a massive amount of time, but surely there could be something which loads in double (if not the same) time it takes to load on a PC?
