Hey midwinter, it seems like you're the one who thinks it's a zero-sum game. Look, Nokia is making N8xx in the size they are, for a market that wants pocketable computing devices. eeepc et al are making something distinctly different. So why come here complaining about the size of the N8xx and wishing/hoping they change the size?

And hey, what is it with everyone claiming the eeepc's have 'taken off'. I don't know the sales numbers, maybe they have, but I rarely see one around, can't even remember the last time I saw one in 'the wild'...but I see iphones and itouches and even N8xx's pretty regularly. And among the biggest market for laptops and associated devices - business/corporate buyers - eee's are pretty much not even considered and option.

I've never seen an N8xx 'in the wild' anywhere except in a movie here and there.. never even heard of it until recently..

I do see iphones and itouches are a dime a dozen.. but the Nokia's are no where to be found and nobody I know even has a clue what an "internet tablet" does.. and they can't wrap their minds around why it doesn't have phone capabilities.

So yeah.. the Nokia is a bit of a unique device trying to make way into a market that has a certain expectation it's not filling... but I don't mind - nothing on the market today is as flexible as the N8xx...

Has anyone ever gotten an iPhone to be a mini workstation with external keyboard, 160gb HDD, and a mouse?? No one I know

Where did I say anything about taking away the pocketable one? Where did I "complain about the size"?

I'm talking about offering a new form factor to tap into a slightly larger size that seems to be all the rage right now (ASUS, Dell, HP, and MSI all have web-books now). No keyboard, bigger touchscreen, same maemo platform, and otherwise mostly the same hardware.

ASUS sold 350K units in one quarter in 2007, IIRC.

I have never seen another n8x0. People who see mine have no idea what it is. I live in a metropolitan area with a good bit of tech industry around.

And among the biggest market for laptops and associated devices - business/corporate buyers - eee's are pretty much not even considered and option.
ASUS is lucky that they're not going after that market, then, because they'd have built a really terrible computer for those people. But then, so would Nokia with the n800.

Exactly. That's why I lurve my n800. It's all but replaced my laptop for 95% of my computer use, and now I'm traveling for the first time in years without a laptop in my man purse.

Another update.

12.1 1024x768 screen
VIA Nano powered
1GB RAM
4GB Flash
4 cell battery
~317mm x 246mm x 33mm, ~1350g
Current price target 299$ instead of the initial 200$

Not exactly thrilling if you ask me. Battery life will be pretty bad I guess with that screen and battery, and the fact that he mentions that it is so thick due to termal problems isn't exactly reassuring...

It was always going to be a battle of ignorant/naive-hopefulness over reality. I'd also bet on it not hitting $299, and get close to release and be beset by delays.

For recent examples, see OpenMoko & Pandora.

VIA Nano competes _directly_ rather with AMD Geode and Intel Atom; not (or far less) with ARM. It has some very nice advantages compared to the latter. For example, it has a hardware cryptography accelerator. Idle it uses 100mW. The TDP is rather high, but I bet they'll be underclocked by default. Its AMD64 compatible, with x86-32 mode available. So provides good backwards compatibility. I don't think this device is meant for (heavy) travelling like a phone, DAP, or n8x0 is. Its not compact enough, and the battery life would not be good enough either. So it competes rather with netbooks whereas the new tablet from Nokia will be aimed at travelling (long battery life, small, efficient, HSDPA). However, these markets will overlap more and more, with differences being less and less. And there is not room for many players and many architectures in this segment either.

heh, i wonder if not my next "tablet" will be a bugbase with a two module sized screen and a wifi/bluetooth module. optionally with camera or hsdpa, depending on the situation.

Wow, that's big. As in a physical device.

If it did get close to a $250 price point, and the battery life wasn't too bad (or it came with a nice dock), I could see myself getting one for around the home.

The touchscreen looks poor, though (see how hard it was for him to scroll the webpage?) and it's a bit thick & heavy.

It also looks like they've no plans to try to market & sell the device now; that's not how I read the initial announcement (and many people read it the same way as me, AFAICT)
