I am new to N810, this forum and Garnet in particular. I've seen some year old threads referring to the problem I am having with GVM Beta 4, in that Hotsync doesn't work worth a damn. I've tried all recommended strategies posted, and nothing works. So before I waste any more time with this product (GVM), I'll first ask the question:is it common knowledge that Hotsync between GVM and Palm Desktop doesn't really work?
All I really wanted were the PIM function of Palm OS, so if this is not attainable reliably then it's of no use to me.

Otherwise I've enjoyed the N810 thus far and look forward to some creative person(s) writing fully functional PIM apps for it.
By the way, I have the latest Maemo OS version and have installed Beta 4 of GVM and Palm desktop 6.2.2.

That is my experience. It works, not reliably. See more here, http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?p=289216 . If you play with it more, you may be able to make it work reliably. For example, the following works 100% of the time,

Applications>Show details>PIM(Outlook)>Show details>Configuration...>Desktop overwrites handheld

Yes, I am able to get Addressbook,Date,Todo from desktop to gvm every single time. From gvm to desktop its a hit or miss situation.

Or look into Details, to carefully check and uncheck each Applications, to see which one crash gvm and remove that particular apps, would also ensure successful sync. Backup and installation is usually the offender.

Hope this helps,

HotSync 7.0.2

I remember it does. I have way too many apps installed to check now, maybe somebody have not installed gvm can check.

How doesn't it work? Does HotSync abort with errors? If so, what are they? Or does Garnet VM simply fail to connect to HotSync Manager?

Thanks for asking;

1. I installed Palm Desktop 6.2.2 on my WinXP XP3 box.
2. I have Hotsync 7.0.2 set up for Network sync only.
3. In the Hotsync Applications list, I have removed everything except MemoPad, Datebook, Address Book, and To Do list.
4. I have Address book set to Desktop Overwrites PDA (I do not use Outlook so I am syncing to Palm desktop)
5. When I try to sync, everything appears like it is working, and no sync errors are usually reported. But no data is ever transfered to the GVM Addressbook (which is the only App I have loaded with data on the desktop at this point)

So it doesn't appear that I have any connectivity problems, as Hotsync runs and i can view the Hotsync manager come to life on my PC, it appears to go through all the applications I have selected and as I said, no data is every transfered.
I've tried many settings and configurations in GVM so I can't remember all the permutations, but my current non working GVM settings are as follows:

1. Dynamic Heap Size = 2 MB
2. Device model = Default
3. Display Compatibility = Maximum
4. Storage Heap = 64 MB

I have followed the Hotsync troubleshooting steps on the Access GVM website to no avail, and I have tried various settings recommended by various posters on this forum to no avail.

Although I haven't used Palm apps for years, it seemed like a promising and reasonable alternative to the native GPE PIM apps, which I tried and promptly rejected, after wasting several hours trying to import data into GPE Contacts, so imagine my disappointment that this doesn't work for me either.

Thanks to all who have responded thus far.

GVM crashes while ending hotsync.

Have you tried waiting a full minute after HotSync ends before doing ANYTHING else with the tablet (not even dismissing the hotsync finised dialog)?

TA-t3: the exact missing files are:

libfreetype6 (>=2.3.5)
libglib2.0-0 (>=2.12.12-losso10)
libhildonfm2 (>=1:2.0.6.1)
libosso1 (>=2.16)

Hopefully I didn't transpose anything...

So, where do I go from here?

On tablet, go menu>Control panel>About, that will tell your tablet OS.
The 2008 version works ONLY ONLY with the 5.2008.43-7, any previous version WILL NOT WORK, has dependency problem. Two ways to get around. ONE upgrade your OS to 5.2008.43-7. Two, use the gvm for 2007OS, the 2007OS GVM does NOT have file dependence problem.

On beta 3, the one before the current version, I can sometimes make sync using Palm desktop. Since I found out outlook is more reliable, I have since switched to outlook. on beta4, palm desktop sync remains unreliable for me. I have done exactly what you have tried, remove ALL apps but only PIM apps, in order to iron out which is the culprit, so far, backup and file install is the problem.

Things I have tried to do hotsync, maybe that will give you some idea.

1) if failed to trigger the dialog on PC: check ip address or uninstall/re-install gvm or just reformat storage heap
2) if sync with error, read the error statement, sometimes they can be really specific and gives hint.
3) if sync with error, do the remove all apps then slowly introduce apps one by one to narrow down the culprit
4) if sync without error, you run out of memory on your tablet! I do not know how much memory gvm use, but my experience they use a lot of memory. If ext2 partition, where you OS lives, free space runs 100 MB or above, gvm may sync well, with data transfer. If ext2 partition free space runs 20 MB or less, gvm sync without error and NO data transfer.

Or try to come down on storage heap size and see how it goes, like from 64 MB down to 32mb or 16mb and see whether it will better behave,

good luck

Found my version number...

OS2008 version: 2.2007.51-3

So, it looks like I am out of date...

Since I have been using the tablet and installed several apps and added files, I guess I need to do a Backup before installing latest version?

Anything peculiar to look out for?

Also, if I do a Backup first, is this like Palm OS that I can just restore after the upgrade and everything including my apps will be reinstalled?

Or, is this more like wiping a drive on Windows and installing a new version and then having to reinstall all the apps, one at a time?
