I am agree with non-english forums inside t.m.o, just for non-english newcomers.
What do I mean?
Imagine inside Community forum some sub-forums:
- Spanish
- German
- Italian
- Swedish
- etc, etc...
This forums could be useful for non-english users for asking questions that may be already answered in main t.m.o., or any wiki page, or similar english resource. A "local" Maemo Greeter could provide an answer and even a translated version of the "answer resource" using Google Translate, for example.
On the other hand, it could be useful having a "non-english resources" site or wiki with links to non-english pages that talk about Maemo platform, since they make Maemo Community bigger.
What do I mean?

Well, I keep my opinion that it won't help, but it also definitely won't hurt (well, it may polute _EVEN MORE_ the Active Topics box).
So after fixing a few of the issues mentioned in this thread (for example, as for the Active Topics box, maybe separate pages would make it less polluted -- I don't know vB features) I say do it.

The "German Thread" lived from Dec. 2006 to Feb. 2008; 79 Replies and 8.000 views. Now a single thread certainly isn't well suited because it lacks topic-oriented structure. You won't likely find the answer to your specific question there... and it wasn't visible from the front page of ITT then. Still, from what you can tell, many of the posters there weren't very active outside this German thread, their overall post count is low.
What I find cool about it and why I mention it is that Susanne (who started it then saying she doesn't speak English at all) simply did it. I can't recall a 7-page-thread discussing its usefulness or possible dangers then.
(And I'm saying this even though I'd still prefer non-English resources to be independent sites without any English content whatsoever. - Reality is... it's not a question of either-or. My boyfriend always says: If you can't decide, take both.)

Why must concerns about expanding this forums "store front" be boiled down to one label?
The concerns for me have more to do with the time it takes to read new posts and the amount of duplicate threads that are generated now.
How will this get any better with even more sub-fora? ( I ask rhetorical because I'm is sure there is a way when we take into account the effects of our actions.)
There could also be karma complaints to deal with from people objecting to other people simply translating their original posts to other languages and in doing so earning more thanks than the originator.
Translating is a valuable service and making original information available to all should be a goal. However, thanks and any related karma as well as other things should also be considered before such an expansion imho.
...so actually I'm snafuphobic.

Well, people. After an disappointing e-mail contact with the regional (german) Nokia Care team I have to tell you that the opening of a german (or other) category in this board (talk.maemo.org) will be the only (!) legal way to start a german community. No one else than Nokia / the maemo team is allowed to use the trademark name "maemo" in public communities and especially no one is allowed to start self-financing websites / communities with Maemo as main topic. I just wanted to do this and include google adsense ads to help me financing a community like this but after I read Nokias answer to my question whether this would be legit (even if remaining ad income is donated to maemo.org developers) I'm scared about posting the word "maemo" on any website containing ads. Could be even dangerous to say the word "maemo" while watching tv ads.. *scnr*
So all in all - maemo isn't that open source it tends to be. A open source software with a trademarket name and a company which doesn't want to have free marketing generated by regional fan- / techwebsites? Damn. Trademark is okay but a total declining of non-officiall communites? Looks like Nokia will earn enough money when they begin to let the lawyers smash existing (illegal!) fansites... that's it, commercialism in perfection, thanks GNU/Linux ! ByeBye maemo, be carefull Qt and sorry to the guys at debian for letting a company sell your free and good work without sharing the same ideology..

I already got in contact with quim gil, think he'll confirm this. I can also forward you the mail I got, but it's in german so you need to translate it. Fact is: neither MaemoSverige.sw nor I-loved-linux-and-maemo-untill-i-got-raped-by-commercialism.com or other domains containing the trademark are legal to use - and I BET you don't wanna risk trademark injuries...

i think its a misunderstanding b/c there's many nokia blogs and forums with the name nokia, s60 and maemo and nokia have a good relationship with these sites and even have a lot aggregated on WOMWORLD.
If they was unhappy they would not publicise them on there own domains and some have been going for years with and without adverts
