OK. After a lengthy dialog with someone there that seems to know what he's doing, he's offered a suggestion to possibly help the problem.

Enable Red Pill Mode. (That's the first step.)

As someone who had never planned to do this, I'm a little wary of doing so. Does this sound like a good idea? And can I disable Red Pill Mode when I'm done trying to fix this?

Can you disable it? Of course. In fact if I'm not mistaken red pill automatically disables when you close the Application manager now.

Should you? well... there's a couple threads around here regarding that.. and it has been said that Red Pill mode is being removed.

It is my personal opinion that, no, you should not enable red pill. If you need something that red pill gives you access to... you should know how to do it on the CLI - since Red Pill doesn't give you access to anything you don't already have access to if you know where to look/do.

Right, well, Red Pill in this case is a sort of last resort, as my Application Manager does not work and nobody has given me any idea of what (if anything) can be done to fix the problem.

(BTW, nice technical support, Nokia. )

Sorry.. I am just joining this thread and haven't been following it really..

Is this still your problem??

E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/downloads.maemo.nokia.com_fremantle002_Packages
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened
If so.. I have received similar errors in Debian-based systems that did not update the repo's properly. It irreparably damaged the file that was meant for that repository. Has anyone had you remove those files and do a clean update?

Code:
rm -f /var/lib/apt/lists/*
apt-get update
Then trying to App Manager again? I know theres some kind of difference between App Manager and apt WRT where they hold their repo's.. but if you got that error inside the App Manager logs then it's still saving the repo lists to the same area..

Have not removed any files. Have considered flashing the device to restore factory settings, just in case that would help. After all, that's not likely to do any harm.

Code:
rm -f /var/lib/apt/lists/*
apt-get update

I would do the above bit in terminal? Would it all go on the same line? (Sorry, very much a Linux beginner.)

Yes you would go to the command line, sudo gainroot to gain root access, and run those commands.

No, not same line. 2 separate commands... do the rm -f /var/lib/apt/lists/* first, then the apt-get update.

Make sure you have a stable connection.. whether wifi or 3G.

After the first command, I got a bunch of lines saying "rm: cannot remove, etc, etc" and "Permission denied."

I can't figure out how to copy/paste from the terminal, and it's too lengthy to type character for character.

Is it still worth trying the second command?

To be clear, this was intended for chicoelnino...

Haven't tried Red Pill yet. Holding out hope I can find the magic setting that makes it work.

Will let you know what I find.
