Maybe it's a UK thing, but I can access all the online banking services I require using just a standard web browser - no applets necessary. If my bank introduced a Java applet for no good reason (enhanced authentication? Yeah, right) I'd be happy to shift my account elsewhere.

Okay people. I have to say I am sick of something:
In reading comments here and my blog, I keep hearing people say that they are "screwed by Nokia" in so many words or less because OS2007 improvements are not included on the 770. How's this perspective:
Every Nokia 770 owner purchased their device expecting it to work as advertised. If it does not work as advertised with the in-the-box (or available upgrades) then say the device itself sucked. That's a wholly different matter.
Say you buy a new Toyota in 2006. When the 2007 model year comes out, it includes a distributed brake force system. Do you go back and demand that they upgrade you to include a distributed brake force system? Do you get angry when they tell you that your car simply is not compatible with the next model's upgrades and there's no plan to integrate advanced braking in your 2006 model? Do you say you were "screwed" by Toyota because your model year didn't include this?

Daniel, personally, I never complained about OS2007 incompatibility with (or not being ported to) 770 (you can check all my posts on this). But, I expect Nokia to fix stability issues and improve features of OS2006 (even after having a newer device).
Where Nokia screwed this whole thing was their preaches about Maemo developer and user community and being fully behind this (if you don't remember, read Ari’s essay on Nokia's open source experiment and Maemo.org).
They way that they talk about 770 platform now is telling a totally different story; it's like, “Thanks for helping to make it a success by developing, testing and promoting this new class of device (i.e. Internet Tablet); now, we have a new generation and if you expect adequate support, you should buy a new device”.
If this is not what they mean, then, they really suck on PR side.

Secondly, I agree that people complaining about not getting an operating system that won't run on their system anyway, is lame.
The gripping hand: I've just learned that Nokia is apparently not too keen to keep upgrading ITOS2006 (by basically not allocating resources to the 2006 team), which is by no means a smooth and bugfree OS. In that respect at least, I find the whining and complaining not only justified, but even by no means loud enough. Heck, even the Evil Overlords of Microsoft maintain their sorry excuses for operating systems for more than one year! This should be put all over the Net until Nokia get embarrassed enough to promise a normal OS maintainance cycle.

My answer: No I wouldn't complain about the car itself, but I certainly would be very mad if they would announce that new roads will be made available only for the new model and they don't even fix the old roads if they break! But if 770 would have been car, I could get next model free as they seem not to be able to fix faults on the old model. Law around here says manufacturer actually have to fix things, refund or get working one, if there is any manufacturing faults. Too bad it doesn't cover software very well.

But in a specific context Daniel's car analogy DOES work. It just applies to those screaming for backporting the 2007 OS.
Now, I wholeheartedly agree that those clamoring for bug fixes have very valid points-- but I'm having to make some assumptions here, because I haven't encountered all of those bugs. Which of course leads me to believe external factors are more contributive here than internal (ie, OS) factors.
I could be wrong. But I'm hard-pressed to explain why I'm not experiencing those bugs. And if you guys think YOU abuse your tablets, I'm using a PRErelease 770 that has been flashed and reflashed and installed and uninstalled with so many apps and upgrades it would blow your minds. This little thing has been through Hell and back, and keeps on trucking...

Texrat, for one, Opera crashes on 770 are famous. Yes, Opera is closed source, but it's part of the OS200x bundle that Nokia sells and users of an Internet Tablet rightfully expect a stable Internet experience. On the feature side, not Flash, but I expect my browser to support Ajax and work with sites like Google Calendar. Are these too much to ask for?!!
I concentrated on Internet related issues, because that's the primary purpose of these devices, according to Nokia.
