Confirmed, my problem video (played on 1.0) plays fine with kmplayer/osso-media-server under 1.1.

I play Xvid on Pr1.0 (and 1.0.1) fine with Internal Player and KMPlayer. I have Decoders Support and OGG packages installed.

Don't try PR1.1 yet.

Just to confirm that these are the Handbrake Profiles on a Mac I am referring to rather than Xvid per-se

Great test! I've converted all my anime using the HandBrake iPod profile on Ubuntu 9.10 and they have all broken.

I tried grabbing a mp4 from youtube and they seem to work fine.
They are encoded with 352 x 264 h264/avc 30fps, MPEG-4 AAC 44.1kHz.

Ok so I re-ripped Rambo II using starman's handbrake settings. Initially couldn't play either rip of the movie, whether opened from Media Player or File Manager. Rebooted my N900, weirdly, still couldn't play either one via the file manager, starman's settings consistently gave the "Unable to play media unsupported format" error.

My original rip, which has similar codecs/settings also wouldn't play from the file browser (media player opened then quit to the music/video/etc. screen). It did however seem to play fine when selected via the Media Player.

I encourage everyone to get in the bug tracker and report/vote to get the Media Player into a respectable state. Or vote for the "please consider open sourcing the media player" enhancement request

OK, it looks like I found the source of intermittent problems with video playback - /usr/libexec/gst-video-thumbnailerd

It can be stack for some reason and if I kill it I am able to have a stable video playback ... well, in KMPlayer. Because system media player starts this daemon automatically if you start media player.

EDIT: I filled a bug https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8165 you can vote

But no more annoying "unsupported codec" even for clips from backside camera.
