My advice. Buy it if you like what it can do now and if you want/need one right now.
If not, wait weeks, months, years until something better comes out.

Oh. Here's something I wrote on a different forum today which might be interesting.

Maemo5 OS on the N900 is one special OS.
- Can play nearly all video/audio codecs that's possible on a linux desktop PC.
- Such as ogg, flac, ac3, xvid, x264, wmv, rmvb, aac, mp3, wav etc
- No need for itunes. No need to re-encode videos.
- Gmail works great. Even from the browser via Android version of Gmail.
- 32GB built-in and can go up to 64GB once 32GB MicroSD comes out.
- No need for hacking. It's fully open to the user with root access.
- Full access to all the OS files including the kernal. Even over ssh.
- True real-time active multi-tasking. Not pause/resume.
- eg. It can even play a normal 700MB xvid avi file in the background while you browse the web / sms etc.
- Up to 9 virtual desktops. (4 officially, up to 9 possible)
- The best integration of internet chat such as skype/msn etc.
- Full desktop version of OpenOffice and Gimp.
- Many more full desktop linux apps. (openssh, truecrypt etc etc)
- It's the only phone that actually can run direct recompiled desktop gnu linux apps.
- 3rd party full turn-by-turn voice navigation is available. (Sygic)
- Awesome mozilla based web browser. Firefox Mobile available also.
- Excellent hardware keyboard. Fully remappable. (4 layers per key)
- Battery life is good imo. Lasted me 2 full days with ~45mins talk, some internet browsing.
- Tons of new apps appearing / improved everyday at maemo.org
- VERY customizable. OS is pretty much desktop linux with mobile gui on top.
- You can create your own scripts for nearly anything just like linux.
(and create desktop widgets that show its output or initiate the script)
- New PR1.2 update with HUGE amount of changes should come out within next few weeks.
- Great still camera. Has flash. Record videos at 800x480 even with flash in torch mode at night.
My priorities were:
- Play nearly all SD-res video files without the need for re-encoding.
- Be as desktop PC-like as possible with nearly no limits. (geeky)
- Proper and super effective true multi-tasking with running background apps.
- Great community with lots of new apps/mods/themes developers.
- Hardware keyboard. This is a must.
- 3.5mm earphone socket. Good video camera.

Anyways, I see no competition to the N900 imo currently. Tell me if there is one and I'll swap to that. N900 will get better over time with MORE apps also. Especially considering it'll support Qt 4.6 which new Symbian 4 and Meego OS will support. Which means new app support for quite a long time.

I'm having to many problems with meamo 5 and nokias to many over sights this is the first device i have ever had any problems with at all the most ******ing thing being that a soft reset which is suppose to wipe a phone clean fresh slate apps and all does not work on the n900 like every other device all it ended up doing was wiping all the apns to make it a phone that can only make phone calls not text or get on the web or make apns using fanp and i have windows 7 so flasher wont work because nokias to lazy to add support or decent up to date software lucky Microsoft is gonna bail my @$$ out with xp mode that im downloading now thank god so annoying and all these problems was cause by a flashlight app this would never happen on android

btw way it a great mobile computer/phone but its in beta you would be a tester they love to tell you how great it is on this site but they never will tell you its problems and flaw things and nokia neglected to
its worse than sales reps but there are also alot of helpful people here also im just saying take time to look at all you options

I have the same problem as the topic says.
Should I buy the n900 or wait for the next device, or even consider something else.

to be honest I have no knowledge of linux, and even if I would like to learn it, I don't think I'll have time in the near future.

I'm priorities are exactly what jakiman posted, and from his post this phone/pocket pc would be perfect for me.

But I'm a little scared, since my lack of linux knowledge. Can I find answers from the comunity to my newby questions?
Also I wouldn't like to buy the n900 now and in 1,2,3 months N920 or something like it to come out. (the n900 has been on the market for a while)
also how does it work with microsoft exchange server?

Also, has nokia issued a statement regarding the n900 usb port? Are they fixing it if it breaks due to production fault?

So should I buy the n900 or not?

I'm not considering buying an Iphone or an WM smart-phone, so my other choice would be symbian, bade or android, but probably I'll end up buying a mid-range nokia, waiting for the next best thing.

what do you mean?

something better? Hd2? with a 2 years subscription? that's funny )
they already announced that it's not upgradable to WN7 and they already announced hd3, why would someone buy the hd2?

Whats the N920?

Edit: its a hoax.

As regards the N900, I would go for it anyway. So what if Meego doesn't come to it, what is there to stop you buying the N900?

I can do all I need on it! So far no gripes at all.

why N920 anyway?
I think they'll go "mainstream" with the numbers next time; N98 or N99 is much more likely.
