A little harsh, fanoush, although your points are certainly valid. I think we've all vented enough in this thread that we can step back now and let it rest, eh? Or am I trying to moderate...

Moderation is good.

Thanks Texrat.

I think Tex made an offer to Reggie that he could not refuse, hence the attempt to moderate.

No no... I have not asked nor been asked to moderate. That was actually a facetious comment related to an earlier post.

I can't believe I'm still bothering to respond to all this. I thought the one post by someone else asking to "translate all of this mumbo jumbo into english so the common man can understand" was crazy enough.

I think you are missing the point here. No one, at least not me is making demands on the developers here other than making things easier to navigate and to separate the wheat from the chaff. I would like to know what is okay to use, and what I should avoid until further notice. Money comes into play when a developer has a finished app and is willing to provide support for said app. I am quite sure I can bring you into my satellite world and you would be overwhelmed and need clarification on things. A large dose of attitude does not help but discourages those who are trying to make sense of this. It seems that criticism of this "club" really grates on some here. For the most part only two posters, you included, have had something negative to say about finding a way to make things better. In post #52, I went so far as to say that I may have unfairly jumped on you and over-reacted but it seems that these were just wasted words because unless someone is extolling the virtues of Open Source you are not happy. As far as I am concerned, I went the extra mile to try to smooth things out but I am done with it.

To use your words and that of the other negative poster here, if you don't like it (paraphrase), then don't bother to post here.

Yup, here it is:

Sorry but Software I can not buy is of no use.
Oh and don't forget syncing with a desktop/laptop.

sapporobaby,

I had intended to stay out of this ...

I think it is you that is missing the point here, and I question whether you really read the things I said earlier that you say you agreed with.

In a community such as this, you gain respect from your peers by what you contribute. That contribution may be as a developer, as a tester, writing documentation and howtos, as a project manager and so on.

If all you intend to contribute is a whinge about applications that are not yet complete, then they will get nothing out of being here. You don't even seem to want to contribute enough of your own time to read the "Development Status" line in the garage!

My previous points were based on my experience of the Zaurus, and my personal view that things could have been done more efficiently over the years, which would have resulted in better software *sooner*.

I have no right to tell someone how to spend their spare time, and I never criticised anyone for their choices. My comments were intended to make some points about how things were with a previous, similar, project, in case that is useful to anyone.

They were not intended to add momentum to developer bashing.

Money comes into play when a developer has a finished app and is willing to provide support for said app.
Absolutely wrong. The idea of a bounty for implementing a piece of software or adding a feature is well established in the open source world.

@w14,

You did see my posts where I said I would test things right? You did catch that didn't you? I am not a developer and I stated that previously in this very thread, but I did say that I would be happy to try and test stuff and report back.

Is that contribution enough?

If you have something to test then point the way. I have no problem with this but you must also consider that my main interests are in Biz applications, so having me test a new terminal application might not yield the results you want.

But in almost the next breath you said "I would like to know what is okay to use, and what I should avoid until further notice." Test it yourself!

Instead of leaving yourself open to accusations of ranting, why don't you try other approaches. You could, for example, use a poll on these forums to establish the level of interest in the apps you want.

You could take the results to some local software houses and find out how much they would charge for developing such an app and releasing it under the GPL. Go back to your supporters and see if you can raise the money.

That might be a better way to getting that killer PIM app, no?
