For the sole purpose of redirecting complaints away from Nokia and instead at this community? Or to enshrine and give a skewed picture of what some people think is wrong with the device a prominent position?

I know, I know. I should stop defending a horrible device and instead be bashing it and redirecting people to buy iPhones and Android devices instead of cursing them with a horrible, horrible Linux based phone that I'm obviously (insert synonym for insanity) for liking.

I bought mine knowing this. This is the sole reason I bought the n900. I saw potential and I jumped right in.

He fits that to me... He came in, claimed the phone didn't do something it clearly can do, put it down, and said he's already sold his because of it, then leaves. That's a troll. I'm betting if you went over to internettablettalk and said "I just sold my crappy tablet model K100, it sucked, and didn't even do X, Y, and Z." you'd get called a troll or worse. Especially if K100 did X, Y and Z, or there were fixes that are well documented in the community forum.

In fact, your own comments in other threads, like:

Makes me think of you as a bit of a troll. I'm willing to bet most people on here do not have a second phone (I certainly don't), and most find the phone part works just fine.

I've had no issues with phone calls, text or data connectivity via cell, ever. Have you? Has anyone? I see lots of threads complaining about lots of things, but it's usually about a lack of extra features (like ring tone settings, or OVI maps, or such). On actual cell usage, getting calls, making calls, sms messaging and data connections, I've seen next to nothing. For most people that's all working fine.

Yet you make a provocative statement about it, in a thread not discussing the topic of call quality and the like... I call troll.

The interesting part I'm now left wondering is, is there a troll community? Do they stick up for each other in forums? What if they breed!?

No the moral of the story is that no device is perfect for everyone, but at least with the N900 if you are willing to give it a go you have a chance to make it prefect for you.

No other device allows you to do that.

Not true.
If you use the device for what it is intended for... like many people do, you don't need to go there.

There are many people on this forum and elsewhere, who chose the N900 because of its web, IM, and media capabilities.
You know, those people who buy the right device for their needs.

Otherwise, if you're not content with what it can offer right now, you are welcome to participate in development.

Many (many) potential users would be happier with an iphone or HTC desire and I think its a duty of this forum to let that section of users know that.

Otherwise its a bit irresponsible and pulling the wool over their eyes. Sort of like a Holiday Club scam.

For those that remain you have the true demographic profile of the n900.

Hence the research part of the purchase

Really? When that was it's main selling point? That it was open source enough to do that on? That was it's main selling point after all, that it's running Linux and is open source, with a wide-open API. Why did you buy the phone if not for that? I'd love to know...

Personally that's why I bought it. Because I knew if there were things I didn't like about it, I could personally fix it. The irony is that the one deficiency I saw in it (lack of MMS) was already 80% coded for by time I got my device and got setup to work on the problem. So instead I've been helping by downloading fMMS and testing it.

I really wonder why you think "commercial devices" are all totally finished and polished products. You can buy developer kits, they're commercial products too, and have no end implementation. They're chips and programming boards and if you're lucky some software with a base OS that can access most of the devices potential. Those are commercial products too, but one wouldn't expect them to self-form into a robot to do your dishes.

besides the poorer battery life and no slingplayer, n900 is definitely better than my ex-iphone

Hey dude, I'm sorry you picked the wrong phone for yourself. But please don't tell me I'm running around with blinders on. All those things you list as missing features are features I don't use. Is the phone incomplete? Yes. Would I choose any other phone on the market over this phone? No.

The positives outweigh the negatives for my needs and I did my research before I got this phone.

Thanks for sharing your opinions however, I'm hoping Nokia staff read this forum regularly so they can address these issues over time.
