Tablet/Mobile is going to replace the Desktop.
The only remnants from the Desktop era might some of the perhiperals: Monitors, Mice, Keyboards etc.
You will dishout your quadcore/hdmi/usb pocketable device, connect it to the said perhiperals and voila, instant Desktop.
Google are always pushing something, not all of their innovations get embraced by the public, so why mention Chrome OS? The Cloud has pros and cons, i use skydrive as i mentioned, but i wouldn't rely solely on it, ever. You seem to be one of those baffling people who thinks that when something new and popular comes along it will eradicate older technology. It's only now that some people are replacing their landlines with mobiles for crying out loud

And yes, I said it would be a plus for WP7 owners (they'll have free OVI Maps and integrated Skype).. But I'm like you, I don't see myself using WP7 (at least not anytime soon)..

WP7 is fresh, no denying it, and it does have copy/paste. I've owned the N900 for 15 months, have used Symbian for years, S^3 for a few months, iPhone and Android, and none of them have social integration like WP7, none at all. Maemo has IM integration, and exceptionally so, but i'm talking about facebook and other social media sites.
WP7 isn't maemo by any stretch, and yes it does some things i don't like and plenty of things i do like - ditto for every phone i've ever owned including the N900.
The last link is 2 months old, think the delays have been restored. Still, you're a nokia user complaining another company delays updates?

The large majority of the time, it isnt Microsofts fault. Its the third party that made the drivers that are erroring, its the third party that made the programs that didnt do it right.
3rd parties. Software too.
Still the Linux OS does not get Kernel Panics all the time if the
3rd party stuff crashes.
E.g. defect network card: Windows 7 bsods.
Linux gave some error messages in /var/log/messages and you
have no network but it does not crash.

You're absolutely right MS is trying to buy its way in, it has always bullied its way to the top - but what's the competition anyway? Apple takes existing stuff, claims it as its own and then sells, the iPhone isn't popular on tech merit but image and advertising. Google is flooding the market making it hard not to buy an Android - I went to Best Buy the other day and of 15 phones, 13 were Android and 1 was iPhone and 1 WP7.
I don't really agree with MS monopolising the tech industry, but specifically from a consumer standpoint I can see the attraction of the ecosystem - having Skype work on XBox? Very nice. There is plenty of tech merit going for WP7, and having used all 3, i would take it over Android or iOS any day of the week - and that's just with the first update.
Even some of the console ports to PC.
But still, I would like to see you playing Battlefield 3 on a tablet, not only would it be stupid- but it would be stupid.
