Feeding the troll, Dave999?

Sounds a lot like the recent "news" that Champagne isn't allowed to be called that anymore - in Russia.

Haven't heard that one yet but, to be fair, if that is true, then "protected geographical food and drink names now apply in a country that traditionally never cared about them" **is** a big news. It would be on a par with "China now cares about intellectual propety".

My friend told me on weekend that there are no more black or white lists on use. Some other names. Also he shared some other stuff related. Can't remember. I think my mind blacklisted the info and it got blocked. I have been watching a series called Blacklist. Maybe they will change that too and dub the sentences they use them.

The story goes like this:
The Russian word for Champagne is "Shampanskoe".
According to this new law, only (certain) Russian sparkling wines can use that label, actual Champagne from Champagne cannot.
They can still put the word "Champagne" in latin letters on their bottles, but in Russian it needs to be sparkling wine.

Predictably, Champagne producers and France as a country are pretty pissed off.

It could be said that Russia is trolling and ragebaiting France with this move - a behavior it has clearly cultivated towards the rest of the world ever since Putin.

Just like Mr Erdogan might be percveived as trolling the rest of the world by demanding Turkey be internationally called "Türkiye" from now on.

Imagine Germans demanding their country be called Deutschland from now on. Finns demanding it to be called Suomi from now on. Etc. etc.

I know. I had lots of fun drinking Советское Шампанское in my youth
Later, in 1996, I went to Ukraine on business and had to drink Советское Игристое (Sovetskoye Igristoye, "Soviet sparkling wine") instead. Same drink, same bottles, same label, only one word difference.

According to this new law, only (certain) Russian sparkling wines can use that label, actual Champagne from Champagne cannot.

Wow. I didn't know that. If that isn't trolling, then I don't know what is.

That's not new. I came across that in early 2000s. Definitely before 2005. I was working at a certain anti-virus company that shall not be named. We had to rename all our blacklists and whitelists to "block list" and "allow list".
