I was talking to a cousin today and she was blown away by the fact that you could do voice dictation with Android. I was talking to her about the upcoming translation feature, or dictating an email, or a voice search, and she was floored by the capability.

I told her, that for a casual user, an iPad or Tab would be a lovely device -- you can't go wrong with either. But when talking to her about some of the out-of-the-box capabilities of the Tab, she was *very* impressed, and started talking to me of the usage possibilities .

It's worth noting that she is *not* a gadget person in the slightest, and somewhat refuses to accept smartphones, but was very interested in the Tab as a companion device. Go figure.

If this is a sign, the Samsung may have a real winner on their hands.

Here's probably the best hands on videos of the Tab I've seen. Warning, there's not much new here, but it's a very thorough overview nonetheless:

This is the only reason why the update cycle for iOS devices is somewhat a turn off -- for me anyhow. Though they release new devices yearly, which is nice for new buyers.

Even the *oldest* android phone, the G1, has had the benefit of having Froyo installed on it via cyanogen, and it's likely to get Gingerbread as well.

True. Maybe the more I think of it maybe Android on a Tablet is for me rather than IOS.

I would recommend that you carefully consider your options and physically try each device if possible. I'm partial to Android, but my needs are unique, and I'd hate to influencing you into making a sub-optimal choice.

Just curious, what made you potentially rethink getting an Android tablet?

Mainly that with both IOS and Android I would have to jailbreak/root them to get what I want. And Apple seems more determined to stop jailbreaking versus Android hardware companies who don't actively try (from what I've followed).

Also Google tends to release their cool new stuff on Android and iPhone and iPad might get it later (like Google Goggles).

Ironically, my mom (who HATES computers) wants my Droid after seeing all the crap it does for me on a daily basis as if it was just casual common sense (i.e. Google Maps, Heat Rate Monitor, voice recognition, podcasts, etc.).

I think this is what makes these devices so attractive for casual users. They don't require that you know a lot about computers, to be able to use them effectively; and they can have a major productivity benefit in one's life.

This is especially true with the Tab and it's portable 7"-sized chassis.

I could see casual users: looking up a recipe and then carrying the Tab to the kitchen with said recipe, sharing photographs with a friend, using it as a portable radio, or something less general to their specific needs. All wrapped in an easy to use, no-nonsense device.

When I consider devices like the N810, it makes me chuckle. While I've gotten tremendous use out of the early tablet, I've had to compromise at every turn to get it to do the things that I want to do.
With devices like these on the market, no wonder people appreciate the simplicity and proper functioning of Android/iOS.

* Ironically, my N810 is refusing to start this morning. Yep, it's going to be one of 'those' days where I spend more time getting my unit to work than using it for work.

Somewhat expensive WiFi only Tab coming soon for the price of $499.99. This how much I would have expected the 3G Tab to cost.

$499 is a good price for those not looking to pay extra for 3G!
