Bigger question is, does the WiFi-only version still have GPS or will it be GPS-disabled like the WiFi-only Archos tablets?

That is a good question. I would imagine that they would have GPS as the Samsung Android player has GPS despite the WiFi only model. At the cost of these integrated chipsets, it would probably cost more to remove the funcitonality.

Seeing the release of the wifi only Tab (@BestBuy) has piqued my interest again in the Tab. Of course I already am using an Android phone now (HTC EVO). But another wifi device could fit into my work pattern (provided I can tether this to the EVO).

Having used a iPad (my wife's) I can vouch for the closedness of the apple ecosystem. While the ui and keyboard etc (am typing on the iPad now) is very good) but the fact that I have to sync to my computer via iTunes is not my cup of tea. I was connectivity and consumption and all ON my mobile device.

The Tab seems to fulfill that aspect and more pretty well. So me thinks I am in.... Now only hurdle is to convince my boss at home. :-)

Unless the GPS chipset is part of the cellular module (since all cell phones have to have GPS by law anyway, it would make sense to combine it into the mobile phone radio chipset).

All cell phones have to have GPS by [US] law?! Really?

What was the motivation for this?

Really, all cell phones have to have a GPS chipset as well. Thats a new fact to know. But then this must be a new one - as old cell phones naturally didn't have this.

Only hope this is not so the big brother (edited: Uncle Sam) can track you anywhere ? only kidding.

I remember it being all over the news back when it was first mandated.

I'm being 100% genuine. I live in Canada, and don't watch TV, so I can see why I missed this! This is very, very interesting.

Wow, it seems like the government wants tabs on the public. It's a little scary, really. And I wonder how effective it would be as criminals would easily be able to spoof GPS locations or buy modified devices.

I suppose it would be useful for emergency situations, though.

Here is an Adobe photoshop presentation that features that Tab. Neat, but not great:

Out of curiosity can I tether this with my N900 and use my N900's data connection in which case I may just go for wifi only version) though I may wait till end of the year to see what other android options materialise). Also can I do the same with a blackberry? I know you can do this with android devices but not sure if other devices have this ability?
