Hi endsor,

Some info on Plasma mobile (may be slightly off-topic, but hey):

If you'd like to be kept up to date with the latest development info the different chat rooms and, of course, the mailing list provide just that See here for how to join those if you're interested.

To speed up contributions to the different efforts and to help people that would like to contribute, they've recently introduced the interactive Find your way page/guide that suggests projects for you, based on your interests and abilities.

Regarding the current state of affairs I believe they're making quite the push at the moment. I'm not sure of this, but I think so by the amount of chat traffic I see The reference device at this point is actually not the mildly outdated Nexus 5, but the Nexus 5X The most recent pre-built image for the Nexus 5 is actually broken. If you want to give it a try, see here (but you probably already know that, since you tried it already ).

Oh yes indeed I am aware that nexus 5 image is broken...
I check in once in a while now...just to see if any progress has been made concerning it.

I am extremely loathe to invest any more time, effort or money in new devices for any os that simply moves on and abandons projects that were their darling.
yes the nexus 5 is 2013 model...
still...
we are not dealing with android , microsoft or iphone here...
rather ...the opposite..of closed everything...
so I don't believe that with the specs the nexus 5 has ...there should be any reason why a linux based os cannot run, pared down even, a "lite" version even, a "meant for older hardware" even...

an up to date UT works on nexus 5
an up to date Lineage oreo 8.1 works on nexus 5
(I am just waiting for a couple fixes in it and I hope to run the latest Android "Pie" roms ...in fact...)
Maru and Bliss run fine....
Hell...even 'quasi-source"(TM) Sailfishos runs on the nexus 5
and there are more...that run fine...

So what is the huge impediment with getting plasma to run properly on the nexus 5 ?
Don't get me wrong, I love plasma...would love a functioning plasma on a device...
But not if the overall mentality is to abandon ...in succession ..devel and implementation on what a year ago ran...
It means I can expect suddenly one day to see plasma not function on my new Librem ...(or whatever is cutting edge now...) ...and realize after waiting and waiting , and asking questions that receive no proper answer, that the "powers that be" have decided to abandon it...
Just like the nexus 5.

So...until that mindset of instantaneous abandonment due to the latest shiny-shiny that the devs want to play with...
then ...they are not really thinking of all the end users that support them.

and I don't have time for B@ll***** hamster-wheel running like that ...
and that is the REAL pity because I REALLY like plasma...

EDIT / UPDATE:
And for those who didn't know, there IS a workaround to get plasma running on the nexus 5 ,
https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?...142002#p405690
which is great a user has figured out and shared, yet STILL, this is not an official fix , and official support is exceedingly lean for the nexus 5 due to interests with newer shiny-shiny.
For something as basic as installation ...on hardware that it does work on...Endusers should NOT be the ones dealing with this, nor should endusers wait for the spans of time the nexus 5 users have, for answers that NEVER came officially.
This is the kind of behavior I am speaking of.
Not an issue with "outdated hardware" ...plasma on nexus 5 works.
This is ignoring the end users who need help and are asking questions....and get silence.
Look at the past 3 years of the plasma forum for the nexus 5 ...
This isn't an overnight thing.
This is established behavior.
And when my new Necuno is a day or week or month or year or 2 or ?? old ...when will support officially go silent from plasma?
with not even a "Oh by the way..." , or "So long and thanks for the carp..." ?

yup..straight from the donkey's jaw..

We ALL (those that have been here long enough) have been through that grist mill repeatedly with the entirety of the NIT line...with Nokia..
The only saving grace being community and user patches updates maintenance devel and etc...
that enabled us to survive and thrive.

You seem to make some assumptions, but I'm not sure there's any basis for them.

so I don't believe that with the specs the nexus 5 has ...there should be any reason why a linux based os cannot run, pared down even, a "lite" version even, a "meant for older hardware" even...
I think no one disagrees. Still though, just like on desktop, if you want to run Liunx with a DE on older hardware you'd probably best go for XFCE or LXDE/QT or Mate. Plasma (mobile) might not be the way for you (or just not the latest version).

I don't exactly see how this connects with Plasma mobile though. The reason that the pre-built image for the Nexus 5 is broken is not because the phone or support for it has been abandoned. On the contrary.

So what is the huge impediment with getting plasma to run properly on the nexus 5 ?
Time, or rather, the lack of it. As far as I know, there are only a few 'main' devs actually working on Plasma mobile core parts such as kernel and boot/root image development. At this alpha stage of development with all the improvements and patched being made I understand it's hard for them to keep all pre-built images up and running for all different devices.

By the way, the post on the KDE forum you're linking to in your edit is posted by me As I stated there:

However, there's another problem: the current plasma-mobile rootfs for the Nexus 5 (20180717-064515) is not working. Version 20180524-110808 is working though.
The workaround I posted just helps to get a very old development image running (built 24th of may).

All in all, perhaps you are judging a bit too soon. At this moment I'm attempting to rebuild the Nexus 5 image myself. I own one and would also really to get a recent version of Plasma mobile running on it. A user in the Plasma mobile Telegram group pointed me to some kernel patches which should make the current development version booting on it again. In case I'm successful, I'll be sure to let you know (don't hold your breath though )

haha
so that was you!
I again am not surprised it took an end user and a maemoan to boot...to get it to run .

What surprises me most though...
Is ...
In the rest of the known world, when someone builds something, supports it for a short period of time...the exact span is not relevant...., just stops supporting the product, .and stops communicating with the customers who bought into it...
Such businesses go under.
And yet over and over again this business model is being used in the mobile arena.
Customer loyalty is not guaranteed with such behavior.

If the devs are stretched thin ...I am sure most of that is of their own making and is largely due to taking on new shiny shiny devices...
Biz 101: If you can't communicate, If you can't support it, don't make it....
you will end up with more people abandoning and steering clear from ever coming back...and their valid spoken frustration will deter others from coming on board...amplifying the company's growing problem.

and yes ..it would be great if you can get plasma working again on the nexus 5.

But that is a purely temporary solution if the mentality of the plasma team remains the same....
In short order, the next released image revision, will present the next roadblock...for end users...again...
IF they even bother making a new image for the nexus 5
Or perhaps they will make another broken one for the nexus 5 ...and not bother to fix it ...again.
Its sloppy, its unprofessional, its a poor poor business model of behavior ...all around.

Well - they collaborate with just everything that is FOSS:
1. Plasma
https://necunos.com/blog/necuno-solu...collaboration/
2. postmarketOS
https://necunos.com/blog/necuno-solu...collaboration/
3. WebOS Ports - LuneOS
https://necunos.com/blog/necuno-solu...collaboration/
4. Maemo Leste
https://necunos.com/blog/necuno-solu...collaboration/

This demonstrates the hunger of such projects to according hardware.
Hope there will be the hardware...

Necuno says they want to use the i.MX 6.
Now, we all remember this to be the former fallback SoC for the Purism Librem 5. I also remember the relief many people expressed, when Purism announced to go for the i.MX 8.

Will Necuno also try to switch to the i.MX 8, and if not, why?
