Beyond aesthetic reasons, I keep my N810 in a leather case, and the bulge may hinder the device from fitting in the case. Also, I use Bodyguardz film to protect the exterior, and I can see that bulge would make applying the film more difficult than with the current smooth surface.

Might I dare hope that we can use apt-get to upgrade *to* the new OS, rather than having that functionality added after we've re-flashed to it?

You might dare hope, but I'm pretty sure it won't work that way. They'd have announced that back with OS2008 if it was done.

I find it difficult to believe that the tiny bulge in question will be much of a hinderance in any respect.

That is old info, and those contracts were lost the first time the Sprint/Clearwire deal fell through.
