They must be really cautious; I assumed 3000 units was just the limit of available cash, not based on expected sales. (OTOH, since they're doing charge now, ship later, I guess available cash has nothing to do with it...)

I was pretty sure they'd sell out 3000 easily. I'd push it to 5000 if they can.

This is totally going against my "wait until the early adopters have drawn some blood" philosophy, but I'm seriously thinking of asking the wife if I can buy my Christmas present a little early. Sounds like I might be too late, though.
Buy the N900 at summer solstice, or on winter solstice while on a vacation in southern hemisphere.

I saw it too. This is a lot better than even my wildest expectations. The forums are still completely down BTW.

Now before we get over ourselves, compared to DS sales or the iPhone (<spit!>) hype, the numbers are rather low. Still, I keep wondering if this will not one day be seen as the starting point of a totally new way of manufacture and distribution: "Three guys in a garage" design, troubleshoot, produce and distribute a totally new computer with -- relatively -- no money behind them, but rather the active support and contribution of a community of enthousiasts. Could this be the start of OSM (Open Source Manufacturing)?

Well, I suppose you could call three guys instead of two "a totally new way", but at the risk of sounding like a marketing guy...

Marketing guy? Nah, you're more of a Wozniak than a Jobs, Benson.

EDIT: There were three guys there, too. So it isn't new at all. Shrug.

But that's OK, you don't.

I'm surprised that anyone is surprised that these things sold so many. 3000 units isn't really all that many on a worldwide distribution, and with the internet hype we've seen. I assumed they would sell out in the first day easily... I thought the 3000 initial run had more to do with manufacturing capability than demand.

As someone that worked and lived in Silicon Valley (Santa Clara, CA) for a number of years, I can tell you that it's hardly a new way to start a company. (HP, Apple, etc.)

Thanks, but that wasn't ever in question; I meant Karel would, if he persisted in the (unusually upbeat) fashion of that post.

Cool; I hadn't ever heard of him.

Minimum mass production order amount according to CraigX (is that name right).
