Yes, the N800 has a removable internal mmc.

I was able to successfully install the ubuntu-mid package today. But upon login to hildon (using the command "hildon-desktop"), the screen only shows the ubuntu brown background with a black box in the upper right hand corner (and the mouse cursor). I know this is probably a reach...but does anyone have any ideas on what's going on here?

The GDM and xfce work fine on the same install.

Edit: I'd settle for an idea on how to trouble shoot whats going wrong.

You shuld be able to install the base image using merinstaller like Meizirkki said, however i am looking into eventually creating an installer that will grab, install, and configure all of the packages for you, similar to how the deblet installer functions.

use "start-hildon" instead of hildon-desktop.

btw, i can tell you, ubuntu-mid really isn't that awesome... I have tested it 2 times. Every time i had to fight with it to get the kourou to work. Ubuntu-mid was a bit disappointment anyway. It was like modified version of os2007. Nothing special...

You got it working in Mer or on x86? I was just wanting to play with it a bit if I could get it working on Mer

It actually wasn't mer. Just ubuntu, mers packages are conflicting with ubuntu-mid.

What do you mean "mer or on x86"? Mer is available for both...

but anyway, i tested it in jaunty on arm. And it was not really impressive.

I consider even ubuntu jaunty with other window managers Mer still even though they use mainly the ubuntu repos since they require some packages (ie: drivers) from mer.(at least the way I set it up anyway).

I realize Mer is availalbe for x86 and ARM, so I think I mean to write "Mer on ARM or on x86". Sorry, about the confusing wording. I was a bit tired when I wrote it.

I've heard a lot of people complain about it not being that good. Like you, I just like to test out the different software that is available.

Hmm, Ubuntu Mer! I like the sound of that! Better than Ubuntu MID.

Yes and it is precisely because of bug https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2747 Feel free to vote for it to have it fixed in Diablo. Also if you provide kernels for your project (Mer?,Ubuntu?) consider applying this patch to keep mmcblk device names consistent. It causes all sorts of confusion and unexpected side effects and may also cause reboot when removing card from device (at least Diablo works like this).

First install the Ubuntu/Mer base using the installer or the directions at the beginning of this post.

Then, to install e17 in Ubuntu simply download this file: E17

Then you can install it from terminal with: $ sudo dpkg install e17-svn_1.2.3-3_all.deb (type in everything to the right of the $ sign) You could also double click on the package if you have gnome or xfce installed and it will start up package installer and automatically install it with it's dependencies.
Note: This will take a while! Be patient. It will download the latest code from SVN, compile, and then install it all.

If you have GDM installed you, will need to exit from whatever window manager you are in and then select the sessions button and choose "enlightenment". From there simply type in your name and password as usual and e17 will start. Alternatively, you can use entrance instead of gdm (the login that is a part of Enlightenment), but I'll have to give instructions for that another time.

You will then be taken through a setup wizard. Go ahead and select the settings as you wish. (illume is the module that is designed for devices such as the NIT, so I selected it, but you can use any of them. I also found the netbook setup nice). Also, I have gnome installed so I told it to use my gnome menus.

That's it...have fun in enlightenment.

Also, I found that it didn't have any Languages to select during the wizard. If your language isn't available to you, you can open a terminal and then type "sudo locale-gen en_US.UTF-8" (for American English, replace en_US.UTF-8 with your correct locale). Then go to settings -> Language -> Language settings -> Select your language

Screenshots available in the screenshots thread!

The beauty of illume is that it was create for devices with small screens (it is the default window manager of the openmoko). So, it's advantage is that it is finger friendly. But, it's major advantages over hildon is that you don't have to "hildonize" applications, and it still uses less screen space. I found it very similar to Android OS's window manager.

Note: I did find it more finger friendly when I increased the size of the font and icons.

Edit:
The default icon settings for illume seem arbitrarily set to being to small to display. You can fix this by clicking the shelf at the top -> click the wrench icon -> Display -> Launcher -> (under icon size) Very Large

You may also notice that your gtk applications look ugly. This is because you need to tell enlightenment which gtk and icon theme to use. First, you need to have downloaded and installed gtk and icon themes. If you have installed xfce or gnome, this has already been done. If not, you can download the themes and icons from a website such as www.gnome-look.org and then unpack them to your .theme or .icons folders in your home directory (you may have to create the folders). You can then tell enlightenment which theme to use by making a .gtkrc-2.0 file in your home directory and then put:

gtk-theme-name = "Name of theme"
gtk-icon-theme-name = "Name of icon theme"
gtk-font-name = "Name of font you would like to use followed by numerical size"

*replace the words in quotes with your theme, icon and font names.
