If you have xkb-data an such from Mer , this should help:

Code:
setxkbmap -layout fisenoda
(Don't thank me for this, thank Stskeeps)

It's already there.

Interesting. It's possible that you're having issues with privileges. Try killing the nm-applet in terminal and then starting it as root.
The command to do this would be something like:
$killall nm-applet
$gksu nm-applet
then try and see if you can set it up. Oddly, I never ran into this problem on my N810. I did run into problems with nm-applet and gnome-keyring-daemon (which is a mechanism of handling user privileges). You don't seem to be having gnome-keyring-daemon problems, but still having privilege issues.
Honestly, gnome's nm-applet has been unusable to me unless I was using lxde or hildon. According to Stskeeps, Hildon in Mer is using some script to make gnome-keyring-daemon and nm-applet behave better.

If you can't figure your way around nm-applets problems you can either try to manually configure your /etc/network/interfaces script or alternatively try another network configuring application like wicd. Try searching the ubuntu forums for info on configuring the interfaces file.

I had the ""device not managed" error still remaining after I edited "/etc/network/interfaces".

I got nm-applet to configure my network connection following the thread
http://groups.google.se/group/linux....f0d6bccc89da69

Change
[ifupdown]
managed=false

to

[ifupdown]
managed=true

In the file /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf

Then restart or kill nm-system-settings.

I solved the problem by changing managed=true from false in /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf.

Answering to myself - this installation was broken. I first started without any desktop environment, but with sys-env-x. I couldn't get past splash. Next I installed (in chroot) Xubuntu-desktop, and got into login, and that took minutes. This was without swap, as I planned to change that once I am in. XFCE crashed before I got to that, and never really worked after that. I installed Gnome, and that actually worked somewhat. I did not get networking to work, and finally started over. I started this time with sys-env-base, but that was pretty much unusable, without working keyboard etc. Next try is with sys-env-x and gnome-desktop, and this time with a lot of swap (accidentally... quite a lot... I will miss my EasyDebian). I havent got far yet, but speed seems to be ok.

I dont think swap is optional.

EDIT: Until it broke, just like that.

This was the first ubuntu for my N810 installed on the external card. But I run into trouble. XFCE does not start with menu and panel, the cursor just follow to the left and the right. Up and down the cursor moves to the opposite direction of the key on the screen and the umac module is missing.
Con you help me?

Thanks to this point,

I got mouse and many other things to work following bman's previous thread (here) instructions, for earlier version of ubuntu. I chrooted to the ubuntu folder (with the instructions from this thread), and fixed fstab, did the apt-pinning thing, run apt-get update, and installed those packages listed in the post.

All of my desktop installations have died young so far. Currently I have base install, xfce4 (but no Xubuntu), custom .Xmodmap file based on the one in the other thread (link). Network did not work either, but perhaps you have better luck (easily fixed anyway, all components are there).

But now, pretty much everything works, and speed is very OK (considering RAM etc). I have had this for some time now (days!), and it is stable.

I guess, all components are there, just some installation script did not ever work for me.

Hmmm, swap is enabled. says the boot screen...

If I try a base installation sys-env-base, what do I need for xfce4?
