No issues in Linux, but I can check Windows tomorrow.

EDIT: Worked for me in Windows too. Can you play the file normally with VLC?

Have made it work on windows and now try to make the server work on ubuntu.

The N810 can see all folders but can not play. Is there something I can debug on the client side?

Also VLC can play movies on the windows PC but not on the IT with knots2.

You mean you got windows working ok but now ubuntu doesn't work? In Windows it should work with VLC 1.0. If you have Intrepid Ubuntu, you can use the apt-get method, but with Jaunty you may need to compile ffmpeg yourself to get it working properly.

I got the windows client to play mp3 but not avi.

The ubuntu client cannot play mp3 but can see the folders, click 'play' on mp3 go to playmode and switch back right away.

dmsg output has something like:
EAC mode: play disabled, rec disabled
EAC mode: play enabled, rec enabled
.....
and it keeps repeating ....

Are you sure you have the latest VLC? If so and you get audio but no video, go to settings, select n8x0 profile and add value 24 to fps, save and try again.

Please follow one of the ffmpeg compilation guides and compile ffmpeg yourself if you are using Jaunty Jackalope.

I will try that on Windows.
My Ubuntu Synaptic Pkg Mgr shows installed version 3.0.svn200090713-12u, so it has to be my newly built ffmpeg. So it could not be it.

Thanks!

ffmpeg itself is not sufficient, it's pretty crippled by default due to codec patents and whatnot. So compiling it yourself with support for more codecs, mainly libmp3lame/xvid may be the only way to get it properly working in Jaunty.

As a Jaunty user, I have to say, you have to compile FFMPEG yourself. But the links he posted. Particularly this one

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=786095

As a guide helped. I wasn't sure if you had to Install x264 but I did that anyway. It's mostly copy and paste from there and you can stop once you've installed ffmpeg.

After that it works just fine.

something is still wrong with my ubuntu PC. If you see my previous post, It shows ffmeg built by me but I thought I have missed some options on configure so I have it re-compiled following the instructions. It did not help!

FYI, with my windows pc I put it in ad-hoc mode, and same with the N810, knots2 works very well! must better going through the AP (strong signal! they are close). And when we have two servers in the network (I tried not in infra mode), knots2 will pick one right away, there is no option to select.

Yeah, I should add a server selection dialog like the old one had or make it work with several servers seamlessly, but I thought nobody would use it But I will add it.

Did you change the path to /usr/local/bin/ffmpeg? What are the symptoms with the new ffmpeg?
