Now I personally might be too lazy to dedicate time to complete the MobileHotspot if JoikuSpot comes to maemo (at reasonable price), but I fully understand people who would rather use free software (as in freedom, unit price is not the issue here).

I think you should first try the userland solution, but if that seems too limiting, then you should move on to the full kernel hack.
