Vaporware mockups are not the same as having the software actually usable. But the point of working on this is to have something with that implements the functionality (preferably in such way that others can enjoy it too), if XX does it better and the price is reasonable then I'm no longer pushed by the actual need of the functionality. Of couse hacking is fun in itself too...

joikuspot can't possibly "do it better" if they will just release closed-source software. If you build your open source solution, then other community members can help you make it more flexible and powerful.
I think you should first try the userland solution, but if that seems too limiting, then you should move on to the full kernel hack.

Anyways as soon as they fix the missing fiasco-gen I'll build PR1.1 hotspot kernel (either by tweaking the rules etc manually or by having had the time to write the script to do it for me [which would pave way for being able to build it in autobuilder)
Edit: actually they don't need to fix that even (though it would be needed for OTA flashable kernel, I think), change 6 lines in debian/rules and the kernel should build like the previous one.
