if this is excluded , it will be on a technicality.

I mean look at it, if this thing works to ANY reasonable level with decent (doesnt need to be perfect) compatibility, this increases the utility of the n900 by MULTIPLES. The n900 can now be used now for things it couldnt be before. If it gets to a decent complete state, it should be an official component "endorsed" by Nokia like fMMS.

On a "value" to user basis, I am hard pressed to think of ANYTHING softwarewise that can provide more value to the user on the existing n900 hardware. And this is not function specific, it really benefits ALL users.

"App" or not, it is code written by open source devs - I think it should be eligible. But again if Nokia decides to exclude this on a technicality, then they are REALLY brain dead as this is a good selling point for the n900.

Ha, a simple thought to get around any technicalities....

Port cups. Cups obviously would depend on this, so it could be packaged with a dependency on either the enhanced kernel or whatever kernel modules package ends up being in the repositories.

That would add printing to a whole load of printers.

Think... hplip's utilities are already written in Qt

It isn't entitled to go into a competition:
1. It requires a custom kernel
2. It doesn't follow specs from USB.org

Not sure about the rest but I'm not doing it for any personal gain (be it money or donations )

I thought that this would be an ideal candidate for the 50,000 competition but then I thought it wouldnt be appropriate as this is something that Nokia should have included by default and they obviously had their reasons for not including it to begin with so why would they let it win a competition

OTG can never be got to work.
There are various reasons why the n90 can never support USB OTG - the wiring is basically wrong, though the components themselves support it.

USB host - what your PC does - is largely completely seperate from this.

OTG does a complicated dance to work out which side is the 'master'.

USB host just assumes it is.

Fortunately, no damage occurs in the case that two USB hosts are plugged together, so there are no real issues in enabling it.

I'm really excited about this work! Many thanks to the folks working on it.

It seems like with a Y-cable you could use both a USB keyboard and a mouse together. Google spec-sheet searches show that keyboards use only 1mW and mice in the 60-90mW range. This is well under the 200mW supply.

The only things I need my laptop for that the N900 can't do are keyboard / mouse work in graphics and page layout apps. I'm very curious to see how well USB and overclocking enables these tasks. It would be like carrying my very-usable 10-year-old Linux box in my pocket.
