Woohoo, sounds like 8x4 widget size

FWIW, here are the news from the development of DrLaunch:
  • I reduced the empty space between icons. This, along with a restructuring of the configuration menu resulted in support for 8x4 grid. (DaSilva's and others' request)
  • I managed to implement *somehow* smooth icon rotation. Now there is an option to animate icon rotation. While it is not very fast, it seems usable. It requires more memory when it is enabled. As a bonus, the whole drawing speed of DrLaunch improved a lot. (rnb89's request)
  • I believe I've fixed the "widget moves when it is clicked" bug. I'm not 100% sure about this since I don't know of a way to reproduce it.
  • Bad news from the configuration window: The widget still changes desktop some times when the config window is shown. Any help/hints on this are VERY welcome.

I'm still on vacation so I cannot create (and thus upload) a package, but I'll do it when I'll be back. Stay tuned.

Enjoy your holiday!
Do you mean something like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hjh8Or9b2s with your second point?

Yes, but much more laggy. Unfortunately the lag cannot be further improved (famous last words?). Of course it depends on how many icons you have. With 4 icons it is quite smooth.

I just installed the latest version and can't make the widget show up on my desktop. It just disappeared. I uninstalled and reinstalled, no luck.

This is a builder/importer problem. Version 0.7-1 which was imported in extras-devel has this problem and you should not use it. Version 0.7-2 is already uploaded and should not have the problem. However, the automated process that imports packages seems to have some problems.

Whenever version 0.7-2 is imported, your problem should be fixed. Until then you may be able to fix the problem by running as root:
Code:
update-python-modules drlaunch.public

OK folks, after some trouble, here it is:

Version 0.7-3 of DrLaunch is available in extras-devel and will soon reach the extras-testing.

This version should be steady enough. Changes are:
  • Bug fixes, including the "moving target" effect.
  • Support for grid up to 8x4.
  • Optional animation for icon rotation.
  • Fix of the installation procedure. Should no longer crash hildon-home (read: should not cause other widgets to disappear).

By enabling icon animation you may use up to 10-15MB more memory for a full 8x4 icon grid. This happens because all image frames are cached in order to support somehow smooth rotation for large grids. Disabling the animation in options will instantly free (most of) the used memory.

Also, have in mind that animation frames are created on demand in order to reduce the load time (which is a very good thing (tm)). This means that the first couple of times you rotate the device the rotation animation will be laggy and may skip some frames.

Unfortunately the "widget moves whenever the configuration window is shown" bug is still there. If you have *any* idea on what is causing it, please help.

Finally, I put great effort on supporting portrait mode in the configuration window but I failed miserably. I can't re-arrange the widgets without causing a program crash. The problem seems to arise from reparenting the widgets which at least one person mentioned that it is not reliable. If you've done this for another program, please advice or tell me the program in order to study its code.

As always, you're encouraged to abuse the widget and report bugs in this thread. If you find it useful and stable you should vote for the app to reach extras. In fact you should vote even if you find it unstable (with a thumbs-down).

Until the next version, have fun with it :-)
