Maybe I understood the problem, but I did not understand why only some sufferers and I don't know how and when I have inadvertently deleted the first line in the file:

/usr/lib/Hildon-desktop/maxcpu.py

The firs line, should be: #!/usr/bin/python

Who has this problem can try editing the file, or download the new version (0.1.8-3) I'm releasing in extras-testing.

do i need the power kernal for this? and does it do the " Calculating voltages" and "OverClock UnderClock depending on temp?"

Yes, you need power kernel.
No, it does not do. The widget changed only the frequency. You should set your power kernel settings profile.

also had the same problem with the widget not showing up

changed the path in maxcpu.desktop as below

X-Path=/usr/lib/hildon-desktop/maxcpu.py

now the widget shows up

I'm using the v46 kernel but its the bleeding edge version if that makes a difference

No, for me it is independent of the kernel, some n900 have something different in the OS, perhaps due to the various customizations.

[EDIT] released version 0.1.8-4 with full path in the .desktop file. Thanks again @jonathanp for your information.
