Exactly. Not yet sure if I want go that route, but I'm only really interested in improvements to Modest, so I will download the .deb and inspect it until I'm reasonably satisfied that I can just "plug it in" (without involving apt-get or dpkg) and keep a backup of replaced files in case it does f**k up.

My main problem (in general with N900 hacking) is time. I basically have a few short "time windows" each day or week, but never enough to make sure I manage to finish something , but I'll do my best..

(Off-topic here: I still have to make a German keymap to be used with the recovery console. I said I'd do it like a month ago, but as I said, no time..)

you people say that that you dont need the cssu, but when your cute tube stops working because your device is not up to date then you think its ok to ***** about it even though its you to blame...if you dont need the newest qt than you dont need new versions of apps too

@szopin,reinob - well, noone is stopping (or even trying to stop) you from doing whatever you want with your devices. You can even mix .debs from PR1.0 up to CSSU, but I fail to see point. I understand there is some bitter taste left from problems which had happened in course of making things stable, but for a month or so there IS a stable CSSU branch, with the last update only a few days ago (for modest inclusion) AFAIK.

Those .debs you are talking about were never meant/tested/whatever to be installed outside of the CSSU. That is why I am saying they MAY work - just noone has ever tested, so I just don't have idea.

szopin, I still fail to see what is your exact problem with CSSU (leaving aside the fact that we stupid CSSU devs have not asked you how to organise updates). And please don't put words in my mouth next time ok?

BTW it will be very interesting when there is a community kernel(there will be) and .debs in question depend on it (as features, not just a simple .deb control file dependencies). How and where you will get support if something is not working?

Are people still using PR 1.2 refusing to update to PR 1.3? I could understand if there wasnt a stable release, but that is not the case. On the same line of thought though users not running cssu seem to have no problem installing anything that pops up in extras devel.

I dont get it the devs working on cssu are some of the best on tmo yet I could make a package upload it extra devel, call it space optimizer which would be nothing more than a script that reformats MyDocs and I bet people would download it by the dozens.

So why arent you using cssu?
I also waited a long time, before installing cssu. To be honest, I installed the stable cssu last week.

Why did I wait so long?

Well, I didn't had any problems. Everything was running fine for me. Portrait would be nice to have, but not so urgent for me. My N900 is my only mobile phone and I use it for two years now, every day. That's, why I take care a little bit about what I'm installing on it.

At the end I wanted to have portrait and all the features and fixes that might be comming in future. I'm also very confident in this community and absolutely sure, that if the Developers offering a stable cssu, that it is stable (as far as possible). If there would be a problem you allways will get very good and very fast help, here.

After a week I'm very happy with cssu. I didn't had any problems. And cssu makes the N900 better than it ever was and is the proof for the spirit of this community.

Thanks to all, who have worked on cssu (and hopefully will work on it) and did such a great job.

T.

Well, at least *I* am used to updating, as required, *individual* packages. I know that with the N900 is not easy when those packages are part of the maemo distribution, combined with the (excuse me but this is my very personal opinion) brain-f***d apt-get and similar dependency-dependent systems, combined with developers arbitrarily placing random dependencies or ignoring them).

I would be happy to remove the maemo-metapackage so as to allow installing/updating replacements for maemo packages. But apparently CSSU has chosen a different path: take all or nothing.

As long as I'm not satisfied that I need *all* of the CSSU (and for now I don't), then I'll either stay away from it, or hack my way into installing *only* the packages I need/want.

BTW it will be very interesting when there is a community kernel(there will be) and .debs in question depend on it (as features, not just a simple .deb control file dependencies). How and where you will get support if something is not working?
I wonder what sort of program (pardon, package will *need* a particular kernel feature. User-oriented programs will most likely never need that. At least I've never come across a Linux program requiring a certain kernel, aside from the obvious system-level utilities (e.g. "ps" needs the /proc filesystem and kernel-auditing and such).

Obviously when I newer community/power kernel comes and I need it because of some extra features or bug fixes I will install it.

Ah! Here's some solid data, then. What would these errata be? What problems have they been causing, and how does using the CSSU fix them?

The latest CSSU update with the updated email client is superb. You really don't know how useless the stock email client is until you try the CSSU updated version. No more hanging and hasn't crashed once.

Cool! Any details on what has been changed? (My stock email client hasn't hanged or crashed yet, so I'm not sure I'd see a difference there...)
