If it means the next phone we can expect is well & truly low-end, then it's "goodbye Jolla" for me.
Unless they're planning a simultaneous bottom-end & upper mid-end release, which I doubt.

.... and the Jolla one is actually fast enough for everything and the camera issues are more from the software side than hardware related ...

I have to disagree there, the camera issues in Jolla have nothing to do with SW, the problem is the camera module which is what you'd expect in a non-brand generic android device.
It is really the achilles-heel of the device, the only thing that is not really good quality IMHO.

I would not discard low end devices entirely... that is where the best value for the buck usually is. However, did you check the specs? the "top" chip of the X3 family (the one with LTE support) is a quad core 64bit @ 1.4Ghz. It does not look like cpu performance will be much of a problem on a phone.
The OS doesn't really require a lot of hardware to be thrown at it due to it being optimized.

I think I read the chip would handle a full hd display, as well.
Personally, I would go for a lower resolution OLED display, and the largest battery they can afford. It will be needed to keep it working as a wifi router for my tablet!
