Look at my pictures of the actual board: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=45385

That USB port will break off if you mishandle the phone in any way (and sometimes even if you don't). I think that at the moment I have the only permanent solution. It's ugly, it shouldn't have to be done, but what are the other options?
The other option is to minimize your use of the USB port by using an independent charger and other ways you can avoid the dangerous USB option. Of course, it will not be possible to avoid 100% of USB usage, which is why I use the word "minimize".

What do you mean independent charger? An external battery charger? That is very inconvenient, and you will surely find the the back cover was not specified for daily openings.

I beg your pardon, an external battery charger is not a bit inconvenient. Connecting your tablet by wire to a stationary object to charge it is inconvenient because it effectively immobilizes the tablet. Putting a battery in an external charger while you go do the mambo is very convenient.

Also, you will find that opening the back cover gets much easier after daily openings.

I agree that you are handling this in exactly the correct way.

And We are all very greateful for your help and support in the community.

Please forgive us that we sometimes seem short tempered and pissed of in this community. We have reason but I truly hope you do not see it as a slight against yourself. Your lack of emotion is exactly what we need representing us within nokia.

My inpatience for results is unavoidable. The problem is at the moment many of us are left with no idea what to do next. My phone was looked at in the head office after the latest nokia statement. It was returned as if the statement had not been made.

Calling the care line is ineffective. and I am now hearing rumers that the insureance will deem it user abuse and not covered because nokia has.

I am one of many with this issue. And to be hoinest I really think bonfires and pitch folks on nokias front lawn is the right way to go. Unfortunatly we no longer have any front lawn to go to. As they have closed the flag ship store I cant ev en stand there with a placard.

Who do we even speak to now?

I understand where you're coming from HumanPenguin. I was lucky in the way I received my original N900, and in having access most people don't for recourse... if I'd bought it and it broke I'd be raging too.

I am preparing a final (?) follow-up on my blog and am gathering facts. That hopefully will include comments from someone with more expertise than even I have with PCBs.

OK we have gotten one step futher with my phone.

I finaly managed to get through to someone at nokia. Without getting cut off.

Turns out that when I take a phone into a care centre and they say they will send it to head office. It actully just goes to another 3rd party care centre, One more great example of Nokia the "communications" company.

So now they are sending me a form that will allow me to ship it to a true head office care centre. Assuming they have "comunicated" that correctly.

They also said I would have to pay shipping. Until I was firm with them .

And no one is actually able to give me any real information about my phone at all.

Texrat, I am curious if you, or anyone else has gotten pictures from an "updated" device which illustrates the difference which may exist in the newer hardware. Mine is one of the first batch, and although I have had no issues at all, I do think about it every time I plug it in (and unplug it). Thanks -- Thor

My n900 is week 3/2010 so supposedly it IS a second batch. It looks identical to previous versions though.

Unless they went with a through-hole connector (as I recommended but doubt was done), the fix will likely not be visibly obvious.

The second-best fix is improve the copper-pad-to-PCB bonding. You won't see that at all.

I remember reading somewhere about enlarging the pads.
