here in mexico we have a different issue, because telephone operators add one digit to cellphone numbers. You dont seem to have this problem.

The fail-too-many displays when we run out of SMS monthly registration requests, this to prevent excesive SMS losses for whatsapp company, every SMS means money, and its more when it's international messaging.

I dont think clearing device helped you, instead I guess whatsapp team manually resetted your counter back to 5 or 8 whatever is the initial limit, after the 7 mails you sent them. And the clear device you did was just a coincidence. But just my thoughts, and Im sure tgalal is already aware of this, and realeasing the new version with internet confirmation-

Intially, I thought Whatsapp has a counter on their end. But I have 3 devices. Iphone and N9 failed. But android never fails in verifying. How can the results differ when it is stored on their end?
Besides it might be too much of a coincidence that they clear my counter right after i cleared. Plus, i think the Whatsapp team is based in Mountain View and I cleared my device at 11am GMT+8.

Besides, I think you might have 2 issues compounded. Firstly, you have the number difference issue. Because the numbers do not match, and you keep trying, and resulted in "Fail-too-many". As for my case, my number works fine but i tried too many times in verifying due to my own hobby of playing with mobile phones.

Anyway, like I say, I am just sharing what worked for me.

Well, please confirm me this, but on symbian, I dont need to receive an SMS, its an internet-only method. I dont remember well, but as far as I remember the iphone uses internet only method too, without SMS, unless you have issues.

Android not sure also, but I think its internet-only. Please share your experience

I do not think i have a sufficiently complete experience but i will just share what i got.

iPhone: does not ask me for code when the SIM card and my whatsapp number i am registering for matches, it just registers automatically. But it asks me for code when the SIM card and the phone number does not match.

Android. So far I have only tried with matching SIM card and phone number and it registers automatically in whatsapp, so it never asks me for any code, just like in iPhone. I have not tried SIM card and with a different number. But i think it is not internet only. It does not allow registration with WIFI without SIM card.

it does need the sim card because I could use obama's phone number and hijack his whatsapp account, but its different to only need to confirm the sim number, than using SMS to send a code and enter that code.

so my theory still remains, not sure why your counter reset, but Im sure you depleted your SMS limit before, and thats the reason of the fail-too-many

On previous versions I was able to change the country code.

On the first version of Wazapp, when I tried to register using the country code +52 and my number 833 (area code) 1370563 (local number) +52 8331370563
I got the "account expired please re-register" error, so after fiddling around, someone suggested to do the country code digit trick, which consists of moving one of the areacode+number digits to the country code, so I registered this way

Country Code +528
Phone number 331370563

Please note that the number 8 was moved from the phone number to the country code space. This led me to register succesfully, but when I texted my contacts they wouldnt recognize me, even when my number was +528331370563. Then I got to the conclussion that the digit trick created another account, using my numbers in different way. So, instead of being a mexican phone number, it was a country with country code +528 (which doesnt exist)

Then I took my sim to an official whatsapp client and registered succesfully, then I noted that all my contacts where under this format: +52 (country code) 1 (operator code to distinguish cellphones from landlines) 833 (area code) 1234567 (phone number)

i.e
+52 1 8331370563

(this is explained on wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%2B52#D...co_from_abroad)

Here, the cellphone operator assings one digit (number 1) before every area code number when trying to call from outside mexico. So, here in mexico I can call cellphones by dialing either 8331370563 or +528331370563. But if someone from the US or other country wants to call to my cellphone, they have to dial +52 1 8331370568 and this rule applies to every mexican cellphone, and maybe other countries.

When I try to do the digit trick on my N9 by typing +521 8331370563 or +52 18331370563 the app doesnt recognize my number as own, so it display error. On the official app I just select my country and my number 8331370563. This makes me think that the official whatsapp client sends extra info to the server telling it that Im living in Mexico and there needs an extra digit for incoming cellphone calls or SMS, and not just the country code number.

Also, this might create problems when syncing contacts. Because we dont usually save numbers on international format, when we save it to wazapp, it has to send it to Whatsapp server and "convert" it to international format, plus every other digit operators might add, such as in my case.

This is important, because our contacts might be sending messages to us, but we wont receive because of account variations. And if they save it on their address book, they wouldnt know which one is which when trying to text us. So we wont receive every message, killing the purpose of Whatsapp

This mesage was sent to tgalal for review, but I think he's already aware of this!
Hey, Tarek Galal is already aware of this problem, I'm from Mexico as well and I was lucky to report him this problem while he was online two days ago, he said the next update version will fix it. I guess trying too many times won't make any difference, it is just a matter of being patient!

yes, that is also what i am guessing since the first time i post, so your point is? It is just that I think the information is on the phone. But I might be very wrong.

my point is that we have to wait, and want to make it clear, since there are more people out there that might have this issue too. Patience is the key here

yes, good to be patient and get a solution that address the root issue.

Like i say, i was just sharing what worked for me, it was not meant to be the solution to the issue.

Might be, but I don't think a ping check will cause the longer load times and heavier use of resources.

BTW, what's this ping check for anyway? When switching from wlan to 2g/3g there's a chance it won't connect, forcing you to restart the app.

Still it is a great app and I'm pretty sure we'll get it just right in no time.
