Just run devel-su and you will become root.

The /etc directory is protected by Harmattan's security framework aegis, so just being root is often not enough to modify the files. Also, the security policy is such that if you modify some files that are deemed "critical", aegis will force the device into "malfunctioning" state which you can't fix without reflashing.

Anyway, someone already posted the correct instructions. After installing the developer tools, you should have "devel-su" command. Run that, the password is "rootme". After that you should be able to modify the files. But I recommend you to wait until N9 has flasher.

Oh I'll just add an additional warning... I would also recommend against activating the developer mode until the N9 flasher becomes available. Someone in the MeeGo forum posted that something went wrong when activating the developer mode and the device went into malfunctioning state, and is thus unusable until the flasher becomes available :-P.

I'm not sure you understand the idea of accounts and roles. You are, normally, 'user'. To do anything as the 'root' user, you need to issue a command that allows other commands (like the 'mv' command or even a shell that you can perform multiple commands in). The idea that toggling developer mode does something that you described as 'gives you root' sounds odd. What I imagine it probably does is disable the ability to be able to issue commands as the root user--hence, turning on developer mode simple permits a sudoers privilege that lets the 'user' go ahead and issue things like 'su' or 'sudo' to be able to issue root access commands.

Also, I have to agree with the previous post that said that you should probably wait until there's a flasher and image available. There's no point in bricking your device already. I would hope that there's plenty of hacky snacky stuff you can already do without needing to root it.
