I just bought a n900 today, and after reading almost all the posts, im scared, and only a question shows up in my head:

Why the hell would anyone use micro usb instead of mini usb?

My n95 has a mini usb. I abused it for 2 years. Still works. Almost every mini usb cable i used, not once had a tight fit.

On the other hand, I have seen a lot (a LOT) of other devices (digital cameras, etc) with micro usb, that the inside part of the conector (on the device) breaks and there is no way to fix it.

MicroUSB is supposed to be the standard going forward I thought?

This is the response i got from nokia about my broken miscro female port.
"Your N900 was received for repair on 02/25/2010. Unfortunately we were unable to repair your device and are currently awaiting delivery of a replacement device for you."
Im guessing a refurb, can anybody give me some insight on whether its a refurb or a new one?
Atleast im getting it fixed.

The relative good news is you getting the phone fixed, congratulations!

darn, after paying $550+ for a device we are left with the happy feeling that we can continue using the device, pity us!

My foot got caught in the charger wire, and my N900 dropped on a soft carpet. When i picked it up, i saw that the usb port was attached to the end of the charger and apart from the device.

Looks like i've joined this elite club of usb port breaking apart. I've got insurance with Vodafone but i'm gonna have to take it to a Nokia customer care point tomorrow to get it booked in. I have a spare battery that is fully charged so i suppose i'll have to back-up all my files to a MMC card and hope for the best right?

Really unlucky that this has happened

Good luck with getting it fixed...

I don't hold a lot of hope myself for my phone. Not before taking legal action anyway.

Note that they appear to have misrepresented the outcome of investigate by the Office of Fair Trading. Office of Fair Trading told me "it does not have the authority to adjudicate in marketplace disputes". I plan to clarify that point in the original thread later.

this is main reason
the Chinese government mandated the use of Micro-USB as the standard for phone chargers at the end of 2006, china drop 100 milion chargers / year and this is a enviromental issue.

Looks like we are in similiar boat my friend

The dilema i'm facing is whether to take the phone direct to a nokia customer care point, or drop it at Vodafone and let them deal with it whilst giving me a loan phone in the meantime?

Hey Brian, point the guy to my original article-- I set him straight in the comments section there.
