I find Gartner to be honest in their appraisal processes when gettting these figures, so would trust the numbers. More than enough evidence to suggest Nokia really didn't expect the N900 to do well, and so they didn't support or market it to any great length, not when you consider the N97 TV adverts etc.
100,000 is such a small %, it isn't a niche. It isn't even 'trace'.

Of course, but there is a correlation. Pick a calculator (if you need it) to get the average downloads per (said) device sold and get conclusions for yourself.

With all due respect, most people here are far above average with regard to number of downloads. I have personally met several N900 owners who did not even have Extras enabled (as it was off by default at the N900 launch) or had less than 10 apps installed. So while 100 downloads per device is not too much, do not fall in the trap of thinking that YOU are the average user. Remember, that one has 2.4 legs and a hyena.

I enjoy the device 99.99% of the time but on 0.01% of times she likes to keep me on my toes. Reality is i dont mind the latter and consider it another one've life's learning curves. Imagine 100% predicable perfection how boring would that be.
Who cares about the iPhone - a three year old, tired device which I remember was on the edge of a class action suit for being a rubbish phone when it was first launched?! Frankly, the N900 and iPhone target different segments, and for different reasons: the former is a thorough test vehicle to help Nokia understand how to embrace and work with advanced open source software, the latter a dumbed down device to continue the proliferation of a particular market approach involving flogging content.
I was delighted with the N900 when it first turned up: purchased as a device of interest but never intended to replace my 5800 and BlackBerry. Which it did after 3 days: once my SIM went in it's not come out, the RIM device is history. PR1.2 is a significant step up too. The N900 is a very powerful device and wipes the floor with everything else IMO. I don't give a stuff about how many of either sell as you can't compare them unless you are low-level industry watchers, uninformed as to the capability of either device. Sorry!

we all know the n900 was made for techies like us and not for typical consumers compared to what apple targeted their iphone from day one before they let people create apps. the open source lovers got divided too by android and webos so there's no shock maemo users are fewer...
i love the fact that there's not that many n900s out there because it let me feel that i'm unique and holds a way more superior device than the iphone which you can see everybody is using left and right. i just don't like the way that the device is receiving poor support because there's only few out there but it'll do for now...

Folks, as it turns out, this was much ado about nothing: Engadget posted this story and they later clarified it saying that Nokia actually sold 100,000 units in around five weeks and not five months. Check out this page:
