No, you're being too much of a zealot again.

It is how Apple started; literally in a garage. Same for Miguel de Icaza of Ximian fame.

Search for that old picture with Microsoft's team in 1980 or sth. They had like 16 employers.

Xen started as a university of Cambridge project. Now they're part of Citrix.*

SUN Microsystems started on Stanford university network.

Wait... you mean only hardware?

OpenGraphics (OPG) started by one guy, who got much input from community, especially kerneltrap.org readership.*

OpenMoko, initially a community idea although the founder is a crazy, rich idealist (MS = Mark Shuttleworth).

Check out a small list of open source hardware.

Taken that into account even the name OpenPandora isn't original. The niche OpenPandora is (apparently successfully) attracting is however worth noting.

..oh, and IBM started in LOTR...

* = I was aware before the project got popular... have to say, a special memory

And with 3000 (paid) pre=orders... they have about 750.000 euro in the bank... so they don't have to pre-finance the whole actual product manufacturing and have a fairly good idea about how much they will flog, which I can imagine otherwise a bit of a problem.
They "sold 2000 Pandoras in 6 hours" - not bad...

I'm happy for them. The first 3000, in addition to being the smallest possible manufacturing run, will get them out of the red, if those figures are still accurate. They will have recouped their start-up money, and will be able to make a profit, on the second-run units.

I can't wait to see an assembled unit.

They're definitely increasing production:

We will continue to accept Pandora orders for the first batch until SUNDAY - we will increase the first batch manufactured to match these orders.

After that it will be from the second batch in 2009.

We recommend you order as soon as possible as we must start production next week.

We are also answering as many emails as we can, but if possible can you check the new forum we have set up (see blog) as the old forum is still dead from being overloaded.

An observation from reading their blog: the $20 developer fund donation apparently gets you access to a super-secret beta area. Makes it somewhat more attractive.

So I'd have to pay and beta-test??!

No, they made very clear that it was optional; you pay for the privilege of being able to beta-test, but you don't have to.

Come on, are you telling me you wouldn't pay twenty bucks to beta-test Einstein on the Pandora?

I'd pay a lot more -- directly to the developer. Not to some developer fund where I have no control over what's being done with my money.

Yeah, I know: I'm an anti-social freak. Hey, it's what makes me happy.

Well, if the developer has bought into their model and won't let you have beta access otherwise...

...

then said developer needs a kick in the pants!

There's a month-old interview over at pocketgamer. What I find interesting is that Texas Instruments actively contacted the Pandora team about using omap3 (after they had more or less ran into a stop with the other alternatives).
