I personally think the next step is just to get 1-3 multilingual moderators for each sub-forum to step forward as volunteers. These should be long-time community members.

Then, Reggie makes the subfora and makes the volunteers into moderators for their chosen fora.

If things don't work out, then, oh well.

If that's too big a commitment, then maybe we can start threads with "The <insert language> Thread" (in the appropriate language) in General. The "moderators" will post an introduction at the top of the thread, and they will bump the thread periodically to keep it "active". These threads could also be made sticky. And when the thread gets long enough, it could get its own forum.

OK, if necessary I can be one of the Spanish forum moderators with just two conditions:
  • That more people help me, specially if suddenly there are a bunch of spanish speaking users here
  • In a future not too distant I need pass my superpowers to other person. It doesn't mean that I won't be going through the Spanish forum to take a look from time to time, but I'm busy writing software for you

I haven't been hanging here for so long as yerga (puxa Asturies =:-) ), but I also volunteer as spanish moderator.

So let's get some things right. Please open a new thread if you want to discuss further.

- The German Nokia Care is just as part of Nokia as we are. Actually they probably told you nothing wrong, just a conservative interpretation of the Maemo trademark. Which, on the other hand, I kind of expect from Nokia care: an organization that deals with customers mainly with problems with their devices. By the way I haven't received their email. I do undestand German and Peter's surname is Schneider.

- We are not "the Finnish team". We are the Maemo (global) team.

- About the topic itself: we want to be strict not having "Maemo" in applications' names (e.g. Mapper instead of Maemo Mapper, something that is a good idea anyway if you want to have a cross-platform approach). But we don't want to be strict with theuse of "Maemo" in websites, blogs, etc. So as long as you don't misbehave you won't get in trouble with Nokia.

In reality, if someone starts misbehaving from a "Maemo something" website probably the trouble will come first from the Maemo community. All this is good with a sustainable and sensible trademark and brand prestige approach.

How about finding existing communities that are big in those languages not featured here and making them liasons to this community? M-F already covers Croatian because our administrator is from the region. We'd probably be able to help Croatian members somehow. I just don't want to see the communities efforts spread too thin. I'm sure the various Chinese, Russian, and German smartphone sites will fill the space as they have for other OSes, but Maemo is another beast, so we'll have to see.

That's exactly what I've been saying all this time, except I got called a xenophobe for it. lol

No harm in giving it a shot anyways. Go for it... I'll volunteer for the French forums. (It'll be a good way to keep me using it now that I'm out of Quebec.)

If there are seperate "non-english" areas of various Maemo.org, they should have very clear reasons for existance rather than just being a language specific place (that could then desend into a ghetto).
But I would suggest that the policy be that the authorative source is always in English (good translation is very expensive and time consuming!)

As the community expands, I believe, we will see more "less technical" people here, and as non-techies are less likely to have the ability to read English easily (techies tend to have at least some Eglish reading ability) this then implies at least one use for language specific Forums -
pointers to helpful threads that have been pushed through Google translate (or equivalent).

Also, i would suggest that there needs to be helpful volunteers to explain the things that fail to get translated, or are still not clear.
