HD2 is an alternative option...it gives you all those smartphone functionalities. Regardless the dumb 6.5, but it'll most likely be upgradable to 7.0. So yeah, might wanna think about that?

Am thinking about HD2, Bold 9700 and ever other possible alternative.

I have been on the fence but after seeing the poll: "Is your N900 unit working" with 16% of the first 86 votes (at the time of this post) responding "Mine's faulty/bricked" I've decided to wait.

The HD2 is pretty complete to what it has to offer, also very good if youre a business man (MS OFFICE)

It's just lacking a few things like TV-OUT, maybe a better camera? Hopefully there's a firmware to stable it.

It is worrying to see so many posts about hardware problems, poor battery life (for some people but not others) and so on. Mine has just begun shipping (only been on preorder for 1.5 months, guess that wasn't early enough ), and now I'm on tenderhooks hoping it turns out to be one of the good ones.

But do you realise the poll may be a very biased result, due to people with problems being (perhaps) more likely to select that thread than people without problems? Indeed, people with problems may be more likely to join talk.maemo.org to find out how to deal with them; just an idea.

It's a HTC...

While the screen is impressive, it's probably everything. The CPU is only a Snapdragon, there is no internal memory, the camera sucks (as stated previously) - all this for a higher price tag.

The HD2 is not a good alternative. Droid might be a better choise, but it still won't match the N900.

The thing is that Maemo doesn't make use of all the hardware power offered by the N900 (like the camera), but this might change in the future with firmware updates...

There are always manufacturing defects in large runs of any products. Bad parts, bad solder joints, etc. And even with OEM testing, not every defective unit will be detected. A marginal solder joint may work fine at the factory, but it can break or become intermittent after shiping and handling. The same can applied to parts. A weak conponent won't show until after many hours of operation. Unless the factory does a burn in period on the units, it won't be detected.

Nokia have a large number of units manufactured. I've not read any mainstream media reports of large numbers of N900s being defective. So I take the people in the poll are a very vocal and unlucky few who received defective units. I've had my N900 a week and a day. I had the initial weak battery problem fror the first couple of days. But after a few partial charge/discharge cycles, I'm getting excellent battery like. I'm continually online, check e-mail every 30 minutes doing a lot of playing around on the unit. I have had several slight annoying issues with the N900, but it's all been software of PEBCAK problems.

So I urge you not to make any decisions based on worry about having a defective unit. If it happens, it happens. I'd be more worried about being hit by a car or bus. The odds are about the same.

I will admit of having a bit of buyer's remorse the first day or two I had my N900: the smaller screen, thinking the vibrate on screen touch was a defective sliders and the seeming weak battery. But now like others, I'm loving it. It's been the device I've been waiting for. It's not ideal. There are still several annoying that I don't like about it. But I'm not about to give it up.

I see (and anticipated) the N900 as an Internet Tablet which is also a phone. It's replace the things I do with my laptop more and more. I'm to the point of not carrying my N810 and old phone any more. Even though I don't have 3G service in my area yet. (My old phone and carrier does have 3G.)

"only" a 1ghz snapdragon processor? It's very fast from what I've seen in action. Internal memory? - hence why it's so sexy-thin, + what do you need it for? You can buy yourself an microsd card.
The camera is actually pretty decent (the N900 cam didn't turn out extremely good either) from the pictures I've seen on the retail version. The only problem is the "pinkness" on some pictures, but that's with every single camera - it's the light that reflects on the lense, just the HD2 has it more; but can be fixed with a hotfix.

The N900 is aimed to play with a higher-end of technology & most normal people are not interested in those features + it has everything you need as a normal or even business person. N900 is only useful to program & use it with heavy technology & it's only a step " 4 to 5 ", so you're just a testrat. So you have to consider that as well.
