I came across that wiki page which finally brought the LVM idea to me. Without a custom Kernel it probably would be nearly impossible.

But yes, having a framebuffer console is very helpful besides being cool.

None of my Linux PCs has a bootsplash, so why should the N900 have one

At some point I surly give the LVM idea a try, but as mentioned before, I need to figure out more about the way Maemo does stuff ;-) (Would be easier if Gentoo would run on the N900 for me )

Cheers

Well, I'm sure kernel compilation for the N900 is gonna be easy, I've done it for the HTC Universal, and that required lots of messin' around, but for this I assume with the dev tools built it shouldn't be such a prob.

The problem is gonna be somehow moving root, merging the partitions into the LVM space etc, that's gonna required some messin' around I think, with trial and error...

What're you talkin' about, what higher form of usefullness could you have in fb console over and above being cool???

Well when this whole optificraption came up a few months ago I did suggest this as an alternative on maemo-devel. Suffice it to say I got the response of: why would you as a user care about it.

I'm guessing even if you put everything on the 32gb one you would still need to make it boot from there. Not sure if it could be done effectively.

I guess one would need an initramfs to get the mmc_block module in. Or just build it in.

yes, it's trivial within the the SDK (scratchbox)

apt-get source kernel
cd kernel-2.6.28
fakeroot dpkg-buildpackage -b

and then install it and the kernel-flasher package,
which basically runs "fiasco-flasher --kernel $KERNEL -f ".
I haven't tried reflashing the kernel yet, however.
Let me know if you have success.

Careful with other source trees though.. Some people have had worrying results: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=36445 !

See the wiki page for User:Jebba he has a working kernel and I'm sure he'd be willing to add any extra bits and piecese as well.

One note about external microSD usage: Some flash cards has an internal knowledge of FAT files system and mkfs it with ext3 creates a huge performance problem. At least I met this situation once with 32GB USB stick - it was a definitely the formatting issue.

I guess, it is a reason why A-DATA sells a different 16GB SDHC for Eee PC and a regular for photo gadgets (see on newegg). I didn't test it.

Mmmh I would have expected that from media which have the controller included (like ComactFlash). But how should microSD cards have a clue abut the FS it is formated with?

Same thing might be relevant for USB-Sticks.

But I am not a hardware guy... anyone want to comment on my thoughts?

Kind regards
