I will not bother to explain myself in any way or form from here onwards and will leave this jolly thread for you all to argue all you like.
And i will say this... TEXRAT you are not a good example of a moderator in any way or form and i really do hope reggie after reading your posts from start to finish that he gets you out of moderating on this forum.

why you starting on texrat now? you proposed ideas that limited peoples freedoms, as you see people didn't like that and said so. i dont see how getting emotional over it or attacking mods helps to back up your argument.

Disrespecting users on a forum is one thing, but disrespecting moderators is where you cross the red line.

Texrat hasn't done anything wrong in this thread, nor on the forums, I respect him for what he does, trying to keep the forums moderated without getting too strict. If I was a mod I would've closed this thread from post 1.

Know your limits and don't disrespect members!

Now who's making assumptions? Do you know anything about the person you're accusing of making accusations about your accusations?

abill, I think you have a tough time communicating with other people. You're either not natively English speaking, or you have some kind of personality issue (no insult intended this is just the impression I get from your posts).

From your postings in this particular thread, you've shown that you obviously don't understand package management systems, and in particular the 'apt/dpkg' way of doing things.

If you don't know any applications in particular that cause users issues, then simply saying that would have stopped this rather pointless debate. Instead you're backing what appears to be a bluff, you don't know of any specific applications that damage devices. You don't even know if it was application software from this forum/extras/whatever it is you're talking about, that damaged these hypothetical devices.

So what do you expect us to do? We all take package quality very seriously, no one wants bugs. Whether they're bugs in the application code, or bugs in the package files. (They are two different components you realize).

Well done. Now, if you had just reached this point BEFORE you made the topic, it would have been perfect.

Let me see if I can summarize it:

1) abill notices many people can't read the warnings about not installing programs that are still being developed, and some of those people are borking their n900s to the point that they need a reflash + restore from backup (a tedious yet simple process.)

2) abill decides to make a post.

3) everyone points out his post, while true, is roughly the same as pointing out the sky is blue

4) DOGPILE!

5) abill gets upset and yells at the mods, then goes off in a huff

Did I get that right?

Maybe this analogy will help: Apple doesn't want you to jailbreak your iPhone. Once you jailbreak your iPhone its possible to install stuff that will mess it up to the point where you must do the two finger salute and put it into DFU mode, and then reflash it in iTunes. This is a Bad User Experience, which Apple tries to protect the User from... but since the user jailbroke, one would hope they understand that.

An n900 is, from this perspective, already jailbroken. You can install stuff that will put it into an unusable state. If you're uncomfortable with that, stick to the non-development/test repositories (you know, like it ships out of the box to you) and you'll be fine.

Oh, and make backups onto storage cards. The backup/restore system really does work.
