hello!
so im trying to get this work even though this far it doesnt.
i've enabled the http interface on vlc and put my ip and port 8080 in the n900 app configuration.

some1 told to do this.
"1) On your PC. open a browser and go to http://127.0.0.1:8080 and you should see a simple media player interface. If not you won't be able to connect remotely.

2) if 1) worked. Open the browser on your n900 and got to http://YOUR.PC.IP.ADDRESS:8080 where you should see the same thing."

and 1) worked but 2) failed
(1 worked then tried that vlc setup helper software and after that it didnt work. i reinstalled vlc and now it works again and the http thingy is enabled)

"if 2) fails - vlc needs to allow your IP address or you may have a firewall issue." how do i allow my ip address? and what do i do next to get it work? got comodo firewall and i disabled it.

using w7 and version 1.1.5

any halp pls?

Short answer: edit the ".hosts" file.
Long answer: read through the thread

works well on my ubuntu machine. I had some confusion over the ip address needed to configure vlc-remote on my n900, so i'll post how to do that for ubuntu:

from your ubuntu machines terminal use "ifconfig", which will show you a list of the network interfaces available on your machine. use the "inet addr" of the interface you are currently connected to the internet via (should start with 192.) as the "Ip:" address in the configuration for vlc-remote. the rest of the setup is as explained in the initial post of this thread. thanks again for this app, it's really useful.

Having a bit of a problem with the vlc remote program itself. I can install it without any problems but when I start the prrogram and its done loading I can see the interface for half a second and it then just terminates the program.

Any ideas on what the problem is?

Never seen this behaviour, could you start it from the terminal and post the output:

Code:
vlc-remote
many thanks.

Did some fiddling around and found that it was corrupt during install and removing everything and clearing out the traces of it and then reinstalling did the trick.
