The core Meego stack will be entirely open source. Vendors (like Nokia/Intel) will then add closed-source applications (Maps, conversations, etc) and some (arguably) patent-protected stuff (like MP3 codec) which they have licenses/agreements for. The low-level hardware drivers may also be closed - the Meego site is a better place to check out where the core/vendor divisions have been placed.

The goal for 1.1 of closed stuff:

Redistributable (some only for non-commercial redistribution): (We have BME already, the remaining ones we still have some time to run on.)

OMAP3 SGX libraries, BME (battery charging), WiFi firmware, BT firmware.

And that's it.

For 1.2 we hope to add DSP stuff - Thoera codec, at least there. MP3 codecs and such may have to come from somewhere else than meego.com for licensing reasons.

Maybe some filters that help call quality, but this is a open area.

We really try to do the right thing. Some things in market doesn't move easily to open source (firmware, 3d acceleration), but frankly:

99% open source, 1% blobs - where the hardware works! vs 100% open source and it doesn't.. I can live with the 1% if I can redistribute it and make my own images.

But would the closed parts be distributable to nitdroid?

The firmware? End-users would probably have to grab them. They have access. It's the same issue that Cyanogen runs into for every phone it runs on.

3D, well, I was told they already had it working which makes me extremely suspicious.

BME, well, that'll probably have to be replaced outright.

That's my biggest wish.
For what it's worth I tried it tonight (calling the wife)... SMS sending worked.. never was able to receive anything.. Placing the phone call worked (IE: Her phone rang, she answered, and it APPEARED to want to work.. but I got no sound either way). Pressing the dial pad did result in beeping in her ear though .

Didn't spend much time troubleshooting or making sure I'm not missing something though.

Can't help but think of this dude when the word "hanker" is used...

"I hanker for a hunk of cheese..."

Funny, one of the first things I did when I got my N900 was to change the black on white shell colouring to green on black. I don't want to even think about the horrors of having black on white as a general theme *shivers*.
