Would be good if there was a neutral forum to go to to find out which is better for you between maemo 5 and android but do not think there is.

I'm not sure if you are comfortable with battery-life of n900. Most users reporting charging every day, 2 days is you scarcely use it. But I would guess that would be okay if you're pleased by the n97.
For the rest: You will be pleased.
My advice: try to look for an Android phone that's cheaper, has a longer battery life and could be pleasing with the rest of your points. Some providers have an extra graphics layer above android, so maybe that gives you the right user experience regarding multi-tasking.
Main difference between maemo and android: maemo is more tweakable, more open to trying things out. If you like that idea, you will love the n900. My experience with Nokia hardware is it's quite sturdy and the details are right.
For example: the keys on the n900 keyboard aren't flat, this resolves pushing two buttons by accidence. Small detail, big effect.

If you are in India then the N900 is great since you can install, and Maemo can render, complex script fonts for Devanagri, Tamil, Bengali, Urdu, Kannada, etc.
Unicode compatible fonts for Indian languages do not render properly on current versions of iOS or Android
I've seen a lot of complaints about Indian languages not working on Android or iOS because of no complex script rendering engine.
