The IC attached to batteries are, in general, last resort emergency cutoffs. That means that if overcharge happens, it disconnects the battery, which makes the phone switch off. In other words, it doesn't regulate, and feeding it +5V would overcharge the battery.

Can you, safely, run thin gauge wire between the battery and the phone contact pads, and feed 5v? BME wouldn't see the power since it's not coming through the microusb port, however, it would charge the battery.

Do you need an inline IC or will the battery automatically switch off when it's full?
What you are describing is what i have done (see post #2).
I use a dedicated charger this way.
the circuit should prevent overcharging to a point, but i would not thrust it in case of input of 5V
The minuet that the voltage in the battery goes over 4.3V, it will start to heat up, and from there will probably vent with or without fire burning your N900 to the ground.

But if you use a power source that has an output of 4.25V MAX!!!, you can connect that power source/charger to the battery but please use some sort of multimeter to monitor the battery's voltage.

side question: did you read this thread because many of the questions people ask are answered so far.

Will there be problems at airport security check with these battery mods, I wonder?

And what is your methodology nowadays to test battery's real capacity? It is not video-playing anymore, is it?

btw, I also did order two batteries from christgift from eBay. :-)
I have not tested them yet.

1. Don't know about airport, it is just a dual battery, not a bomb or any kind of chemical weapon i have made.
And i really don't travel, always to busy inventing or modding something.

2. Check post #1, and this time try to read all i wrote, i have of course updated it to include a segment on the TRUE test, the video test is also pretty good, but it is only a good way to compare battery's if you don't have anything else to compare battery's with.
It is the best test because it can be best compared, if you try to browse net or play games to compare you will not get an accurate test because you have to do EXACTLY the same on the other battery you want to test.

Now again, the test im doing is to a battery that is out of the phone so it has nothing 'disturbing' it, it is only doing a charge & discharge test while measuring.

I found another bl-5j batt (1350 mah) for testing but it's pricey http://www.batteryupgrade.com/shopBr...oupId/54020960

Well this is a buyers guide, but it is also a "cheap" guide .
Of course BatteryUpgrade.com is located in NL so for buyers close to NL like me (DK) it should get shipped fast.
The EBAY sellers i have on the list is located in UK so thats also a good shipping time for EU located buyers.

I will add it to Future test's under maybe for now.

Have you opened the original Nokia BL-5J battery to get the cables soldered to the correct places for the second battery?

I took the outer tape out, but still the battery holds together rather strong and I wonder what I should "break" to get it open cleanly.
There is little holes on the edge where maybe is some glue. Should I try to drill the glue out first?

The original battery has 2 screws, 1 screw in each end of the plastic (connector) it is usually a "+" screw.

another thing it can be hard to make a dual battery of the original battery because it has a "hump" on the "-" pol of the battery.

Seems like a (+) screws indeed. Mine had some black glue or plastic on top which had to be drilled out.

The resistance over (-) and (R) pin was 100.2 Kohm.
