(package is obviously broken)

Ack.

just trying to keep the thread On Topic.

I think we all recognise the commercial necessity of having closed components and applications.
It's clear that Skype (amongst others) is highly valued as an app by a number of people, thus it's place in the list
Just trying to keep the thread clean and easier (for myself) to manage and stay on top of!

Regards,

Simple answet for that.. Because none of them know anything about those protocols and won't bother to setup anything like that just so thry can talk to me.. Because it's also too "complicated" for them.. You do understand that the majority of people aren't as tech savvy as you and I..

Anyways ur right it's getting out of hand with the off-topic this was my last about this particular subject..

In the following weeks I will release Calculus (Limit + Derivative + Integral + etc, see my signature) for MeeGo Harmattan, then Sailfish OS.

You guys are aware that whatsapp is tool for it's company seeking for phonebooks, complete userdata, like including addresses, email and birthdays is what they want. Jabber/XMPP was behind most or even close to all new garbage msg apps... they use what is already there... we should start msg.maemo.org and jump the bandwagon.

@bandora ... "you install skype, you register for skype, you login, you add friends, you call"
"you install a jabber client, you register a jabber account, you login, you add friends, you call"
What is the difference? - One is a company reading your texts (they ping any https URL you write btw) and listening to your calls, one is an admin respecting your privacy...

you are here on a tech savvy forum... XMPP is the protocol behind jabber, facebook-chat and many others - used to be googleTalk yada yada yada (bad tongues say skype uses the code as well) don't know about whatsapp but I doubt it is not XMPP

even n900's yet old jabber client supports voip... we tried it 4-5 days after we got our devices...

Skype on a phone is nice to have but skype's netcode is so bad that it is a real battery drainer...

If you really want to talk about fancy stuff talk about stuff noone needs but everyone wants... like apple does all the time. I don't want fancy apps... I want access to all hardware so one of us can do whatever they like doing - I want simple API access to 'all' closed source parts! Looking at the android market... I want a filter for removing all apps from view where someone gave 5 stars with a <6 word comment...
Just read "everything in python" - I want sane people writing proper C,C#,C++ code and not even a single brainless python app and don't even think about that java crap.

I second that request. The sheer stupidity of owning a Linux based N900 as well as an N9 and not being able to sync my calendars with my Linux desktop, well, that's just embarrassing...

Who deleted my suggestions? Its already going the wrong way if criticism can not be tolerated.

To repeat myself, its the small things that will make or break Jolla. General users are used to certain things and unless provided as a base flwlessky and smoothly working package, it will not work.

1. Systemwide fonts have to be built in. N9 was a step backward from N900.
2. IM lacked automatic change ij away status and ability to adjust it.
3. Both N9 and N900 would be unresponsive when charging.
4. Keyboard was not good, and I kept hitting period all the time incidentally.
5. Text correction and prediction for English was awful. Text input has to be perfect as everyone is uses to other smooth OSs.
6. GPS was a joke as well as navigation, needs huge update.
7. Web browser like microb on n900 was great, compete disaster on N9
8. Cloud back up and storage needed. Dropbox needed.
9. N9 had the worst ever email client I used. Needs a complete revamp. Look at WP8 for inspiration.

The bottom line is that Jolla has not shown us how the basics perform. For me, if the basic functions are not flawless, the general user will avoid it.
10.

Uhhh .. Many typos, meant to say systemwide ability to change font sizes. Very important for middle age and older folks.

one thing I like about Android is that the sharing is system wide. I can share so many things to any applications I want to. Sure I can copy and paste but sometimes its just annoying as hell.

lumiaman actually had a good idea about the basics, whats everyone's basics, like core functionality.

for me I just want a good phone, that I can browse comfortably on, take alright pictures for Facebook, I mean there in nightclubs so? decent email push. decent battery life(this is a mass one for me). I like to use the phone heavily lol. If possible the temperature of the phone to stay low.
