Yes but in this instance Nokia have made it quite rediculous and difficult, so much so that it becomes impossible not to notice the hardware advantages of rival products, not to mention the tidal wave of software development versus well virtually none.

I do remember seeing an article about minimum requirements for S40 a while ago, with 1Ghz Soc, 512 RAM, etc. But u know as well as i do, that could all change with the wind...

As for Meltemi and what ever it's going to be, it's years away, isn't it? .

people who buy a SGS2 will be getting a 4.3" screen with a fastest SoC outside of the iphone4s.
the BOM for an N9 should be very similar to the LG Optimus Black P970, and that is around £300 sim-free rather than £450.

Slight exaggeration there, there's still a healthy commercial apps ecosystem in Symbian.
In fact, I recall reading not so long ago that developing apps for Symbian is actually more profitable than iOS/Android.

2 years ago things could have worked out differently - there's no commercial development interest in software for the N9, even enthusiasts here have started to walk away.
Case in point, the average N900 user is still begging for flash 10
