I don't care about supporting Nokia so much...
But I want something like Maemo to continue to have a chance.

Of course the N9 doesn't have a chance agan the Prime, the overall hw is just too good.
But it definitely does against the SGSII....
And besides, do you know when exactly the Prime's coming to the UK?
For all you know it may not be till Dec. or later.

Plus there was that person who found variant codes of the N9 for Ireland.
So it may well be coming to your region in the coming weeks.
Yes but in this instance Nokia have made it quite rediculous and difficult, so much so that it becomes impossible not to notice the hardware advantages of rival products, not to mention the tidal wave of software development versus well virtually none.

2 years ago things could have worked out differently - there's no commercial development interest in software for the N9, even enthusiasts here have started to walk away.

Case in point, the average N900 user is still begging for flash 10

Android keeps getting updates, whilst we get

I'm not blaming, arguing or looking for a fight.

A video i recommend. Michael from MNB's 2nd review of the N9 & it crashes. If u read the description, he says there was a clicking noise coming from the device right before it gets all laggy. But if u watch the video, that "clicking" noise is throughout the ENTIRE video. He prob just started to notice around 8:00, where it just starts to crash. Not good.

I do remember seeing an article about minimum requirements for S40 a while ago, with 1Ghz Soc, 512 RAM, etc. But u know as well as i do, that could all change with the wind...

Only Nexus Prime's hardware specs are giving me second thoughts, whilst otherwise there's just nothing to desire in it. I have no problems with Android as such, I'm just not too keen on it either.

As per software goes, it's been talked over multiple times and it always ends the same: N9 only has all the apps one might need, but not 10 variants of them.

Well, atleast Samsung makes me wait a good while to get those updates. Thankfully ICS is suppose to address this kind of fragmentation.

As for Meltemi and what ever it's going to be, it's years away, isn't it? Comparing its features to that of N9's is a bit like electric windows: once a luxurity, now a common feature.

Slight exaggeration there, there's still a healthy commercial apps ecosystem in Symbian.
In fact, I recall reading not so long ago that developing apps for Symbian is actually more profitable than iOS/Android.
(can't find the article right now)
IIRC, primarily because you're likely too get higher views, & subsequently buys.

And more of those Symbian apps are being dev'd with the newest iterations of Qt/SDK.
This enables a relatively simple port from Symbian to Harmattan.
One example recently was 4squick....
It was dev'd for Symbian, & the dev was able to deliver a Harmttan equivalent just 2-3 days later.
Then there's....

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/10...ltemi_for_s40/

Nokia was late to get aboard this train I agree...
It took yrs to retool themselves for Qt, amongst several other things they were (rightly/wrongly) trying to do at the same time.
But there's no way they're going to let Qt "wither and die" without a fight.
I just hope that their idea of "bringing the fight" ...
Isn't securing some agreement w/MS to port Qt, & then leaving it at that.

Not judging by the rumours...
It's basically just maemo6 (harmattan)
(probably stripped somewhat or maybe not, given the baseline specs)
+ Qt5
+ SwipeUX

no it should not cause LG Optimus doesnt run meego harmattan, does not have NFC, does not have as good camera as N9. has way less flashmemory and 512ram. I am also sure there where more engineers working on n9 than those copy/paste android companys who just flash in latest android tweek little with the UI and then release the device!

Above Engineer costs money! if you dont understand this basic thing, its just pointless continue discuss it.

A lot of us were assuming for the longest time that it surely had to be Sep. 23rd at the latest.
So I guess that's were all the frustration stems from. That & Nokia did not communicate for most of that time.
Plus many aren't getting it at all in their country, they're generally the most vocal critics, understandably.

Agreed that symbian is a known, but what worries me is that the N9's potential has been missed, or in fact completely over looked. This hasn't really been helped by reviewers more interested in hardware comparisons with rival devices. Sadly, they make a compelling arguement.

I think people percieve symbian as old and slow whilst who could argue that a dual core rival is where it's at.

I know, I know, numbers, specs and stats don't tell the truth, but your average Jo gets blinded by the marketting hype.

To be honest I've been baited by the Prime's specs.

Was it this article?
http://www.symbian-freak.com/news/01...app_store.html

The media 'see' the iphone user as refined with their finger on the pulse, whilst your symbian user doesn't know or care what they are getting. I suspect that it has more to do with being fashionable and keeping up appearances.

I agree that the N9 has tremendous potential, rather 'had' - unless of course Elop et al are double bluffers prepared to release it in all markets, whilst carefully waiting for it to build a reputation etc. But I doubt it.

I've heard of TV shows which get cancelled only to be re-comissioned with a popular following - I don't think this is likely with the N9...
