dont worry, as TexRat posted, this issue is slowly but surely being resolved.

just wanna ask what date is that UK release day you mentioned???

and i just wanna add if someone had vote for this poll that his/her n900 has no issue concerning the microusb port, but after some weeks or month, the issue had occur.
Think it was the 17th December. Got it from the Nokia Store in Reading UK.

I'm starting to wonder if I made a mistake grinding the prongs on my cables. Potentially I've increased the amount of time until my usb port fails. If I happened to extend it too long, my port (which was likely to fail during the warranty period) may now fail outside the warranty period. If that happens I'm SOL, and really screwed myself.

I won't consider this issue resolved until there is some kind of official resolution for devices that have this flaw and fail outside of warranty.

A great point I totally agree with as I did the same thing.

A caveat: pads CAN be replaced, but that would be more for an advanced user repair rather than something Nokia would perform.

Yes, seems like it is a really good outcome. I still won't get too excited until I receive it (don't count your chickens before they hatch).

I am still not happy with Nokia however. If they had issued and official statement that looked like an official statement, this wouldn't have been an issue.

I am still not convinced that a replacement N900 won't have the same problem. For all I know it might come from the same batch as the problem phone. Since Nokia haven't recalled the phones it is not possible to tell. I see lots of speculation on this thread, but no real evidence.

I would like to be able to say "I will be very careful", but I was very careful previously, as I had seen the reports of the problems with the preproduction model and wasn't entirely convinced back then they had fixed the problem either.

Plus what happens if I really do drop the phone, and the USB cable is connected? I know it is really easy to do, have done it heaps with my older Nokia 6280 phone (especially while charging), and while the back cover no longer stays on, the electronics still work perfectly.

Hmm, mine, started to get charging issues now. Definitely hasn't been mistreated either.

I took my n900 to the Finnish SCF Huolto -service because of a broken USB port, and they gave me a new phone. Nice

I agree it's a shame that they have still not issued a formal statement, just a couple of posts on a forum.

How long did it take you for Nokia care to get back to you - its been 3 days now, very annoying.
