Instead of numbers on the second row of kvkbd, I have
little boxes. Pushing them outputs nothing at all.

this happens no matter the font I choose

This may be connected to another problem. I can't
input numbers from the hardware keyboard (I have
an n810) into the sftp login box (fn-key just produces
the letter value, not the number)

What could be going on?

Thats the way it shows up in KDE on the n810. You can turn stickey keys on, or holf Fn and the Number key at the same time.

thanks for clearing kvkdb appearance up, but it's the other
problem that's driving me crazy

In no pop up input box (sftp login, run command, etc) can
I input numbers from any keyboard.

Holding down fn and pushing, for example, q produces
q, not 1 (does not matter whether sticky keys are on
or not, I can't get numbers into pop up input boxes).

I can type numbers in applications no problem ...

Very weird

reinstalling kde fixed the keyboard problem - but
that's like using a bulldozer to prune a shrub

Did you tried just rebooting?
I think there's issues in the keyboard handler,
some daemon crashes and things get wierd.
I've had your symptom a couple of times.

a couple of times. I must admit though that I had
been fooling around with putting the tablet into
sleep mode, and once that caused the keyboard to
stop working altogether. A reboot fixed that but
perhaps left the kde problem.

Anyway, I want to switch to the dual boot mode
so I'll be reinstalling again anyway.

I finally got the KDE v2 updated on my N800 without any error, but I found the following problems (maybe not the problem, but the setting that I don't know how to do):
1) Network connection works but the dialog always displays "connecting" instead of "connected". It makes you think it's still in the processing of connecting". I was waiting to see "connected" to show up only found out it's been connected already.
2) The virtual Keyboard is not around handy. You have to bring it up yourself by selecting utilities/vkyboard. I don't know how I can make it stayed on the desktop so that next time I file up KDE again I don't have to do it again(like I said before, I have to learn a lot about the KDE on N800 although I have been using it for a long time on SUSE 10.3). That's not the problem. The problem is the number keys don't show up. It only shows a small rectangle for each number key. On the extended side, I click on the NUM button, it shows the number keys but disappears right away (numbers on the keypad).
3) The red ball next to the cursor is a little too big, IMHO, when you try to select an item from the pull-down menu, it's in your way of reading text. Also I have to get used to the blinking red light. I assume that's an indication where the cursor is. I wonder if I can set it blinking when I need.
4) The google/ youtube video is not working. I guess I have to learn how to make it working.

I love the KDE on N800. There's much to learn. I have lots of catch-up to do. Things like bluetooth mouse, vnc, default setting-up, printing, etc.

I have the exact same problem as jllchao. No numbers in the usual place and Num Lock shows numbers on the keypad for a second then reverts.

A re-install as mentioned above doesn't seem to work for me.

This is on an N800 with just the stock OS2008 install running from an SD card.

Any Ideas anyone?

WAIT, I know what it is I think.

OPEN kvkbd
select the little wrench on the right side on top, just below the red button.

Select FONT
Change to Nokia Sans, I used bold

Click OK

Now I can see them all, I had tried changing to something else, and my numbers disappeared
