Thanks for taking the time to read my post.

I got my n900 today, so the first thing I want to do is update the software and install some apps.

Software updated to version 20.2010.36-2.003.

After doing this I went to install various apps, most of them give errors saying that packages are missing eg

python 2.5
python-gtk2
python-hildondesktop 0.9.0--maemo15
python-gobject
python-osso 0.4-0maemo1
hildon-desktop-python-loader 0.1.0-1maemo1
python2.5-qt4-common 4.7.4-maemo0

I went and downloaded all of these from extras, but when I goto install them I get the "Incompatible application package." error.....

What do I do? Can someone walk me through?

Wow thanks for quick reply

Okay, so I did that... It said 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed 0 removed 1 not upgraded...

Now when I try install an app that gave me missing package errors I get 'Operation failed' before it even tries.

Installing the package .deb files still fails.

Alright, turns out there I can't install 99% of applications...

Can anyone suggest anything?

Go back to the old soft/firmware even?

Quick reply...
As root
apt-get install <something>
like
apt-get install python2.5
What does it print in X Terminal?

Hmm..

I typed apt-get install python2.5 and it said:

Nokia-N900:~# apt-get install python2.5
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
python2.5 is already the newest version.
python2.5 set to manually installed.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded.
Nokia-N900:~#

Do I need to have an inernet connection at this stage? I can't get a signal at my work

You know what I just tried a previous app and less missing packages showed... Just the python-hildondesktop and hildon-desktop-python-loader...

Tried installing another package also, it also disappeared from the missing list. Got a couple of apps installed OK.

Thanks a bunch mate, anything I find missing I'll try this first!

Got same problem. GPRS is expensive so I want to install things by downloading it from pc but I am having the same problems as you. An app will ask for its dependencies and when I get those dependencies and try to install it, it says incompatible package. Hope anybody will help to solve the problem.

This may be a stupid question but how are you trying to install applications?

If you are trying anything else than clicking install buttons from http://maemo.org/downloads/Maemo5/ or going though application lists in Application Manager you are doing it wrong. And yes you do need internet connection,

Thanks Mikkov I got it, and I can now install apps via the app manager... At work I done get coverage so download from repo and bluetooth them to the phone.

Use a Wifi network if you can... you can get the deb files from repo but they would not run, the only way I could install them was run from terminal via apt-get install...

You might be able to go:

cd <yourfolder>
dpkg -i <appname.deb>

But I don't know... Someone else will probably tell me I'm wrong =P
