As discussed in the [maemo-community] list,

http://wiki.maemo.org/Summer%2712_Device_Program

Nokia is sponsoring a maemo.org device program consisting of 60 Nokia N9 + 40 Nokia 950 with free delivery.

One of the goals of this program is to help reducing the list of missing apps (or alternatives & related features).

The devices will be distributed through 4 activities:
  • 25 devices for the maemo.org Coding Competition.
  • 25 devices for the maemo.org Community Awards.
  • 25 devices for existing community apps being published at the Nokia Store.
  • 25 devices for Qt 5 mobile projects.

75% of these devices should be in the hands of their new owners by the end of June. The Coding Competition runs through the Summer and the prizes will be awarded at the end.

The details of each of these programs are being discussed as we speak.

The Coding Competition planning can be followed here. The discussion about the Community Awards started mildly in the mailing list but it seems that it will be one of the tasks taken by the newly elected Council. I will start the discussion about the New Apps @ Nokia Store + Qt 5 Mobile Projects in this thread, right away.

PS: I just invented the name, feel free proposing anything better if you feel the urge.

Is there a restriction against getting one if you already got a n950 from the earlier program? Is it set in stone it has to be an n9/n950? I am not sure what to do with multiple of the same phone anyways. I hope it attracts some new devs though.

About New Apps @ Nokia Store, the criteria could be quite simple:

1. We open a thread in the Developers forum.

2. The maintainer(s) of an existing community app point to http://apps.formeego.org or the thread / stand-alone web about the application considered.

3. Factors considered include popularity of the app e.g. downloads, forum thread posts, karma/thanks of the developer(s)...

4a. If the app looks like suitable for the Nokia Store: congratulations!

4b. If not, then reasons should be provided, maybe the dev(s) want to address them and try again, etc.

There is a section about missing apps available for the N9 but not published in the Nokia Store at
http://www.developer.nokia.com/Commu...he_Nokia_Store. Your help identifying those apps is welcome.

What do you think? When an agreement is reached I will open the thread for this.

Sounds cool. Who's doing the judging?

At this rate, I'll have time to start moving in a direction where I can port a couple of Android apps I already have wanted to do in the past.

Negotiable and ultimately depending on each activity. For instance, if you got an N950 last Summer and you licitly win the Coding Competition I don't see why you shouldn't get your prize. Then again the organizers of the Community Awards might prefer to distribute the awards with a different priority. It's up to them.

N9 & N950 is what we have here and now. We can be flexible if there is a good reason and ultimately a benefit to the maemo.org community. Due to its Qt nature the Nokia 808 PureView could be considered as an alternative, or a Lumia if there is a good reason e.g. a PhoneGap based app running on N9 and Lumia from the same source. But I would need to ask. I'd say do your homework first, and then we'll see based on who is awarded.

Just a correction, you probably meant http://apps.formeego.org

About the name - may be "Mobile Linux Community device program'12"? That would give some incentive for others to join the effort, and won't limit the scope to Harmattan only.
