Where can I get #1? I heavily use AIM messenger and I want something solid, yet fluid enough to work well integrated and won't danger my phone.

If you don't have an unlimited data plane like t-mobile. I'd say Dataplan Monitor is a must.

fmms if people like sending you mms

for anime watchers/ and media heads with rare formats: mplayer/sib/Extra Decoders Support

I was on a Sidekick unlimited data/text. Now I'm on their T-Mobile Smartphone plan, unlimited data/text. Bring it! what programs do I need?

-Conversations Inbox Desktop Widget (technically not an app though)
-AlmostTI Graphing Calc
-rootsh (only if you know what you're doing...)
-Flashlight
-Cpumem-applet (or load applet if you want to easily screenshot and sreencast)

If you frequently use X-Term, then Rootsh is the first must-have you'll need.

If you like modding your N900 (e.g. changing LED colours, battery icons, etc...) then OpenSSH will be useful.

If you want to play with your N900, VGBA and ScummVM should be your first choices.

And, of course, some utilities you'll find helpful:
-Flashlight
-Cpumem-applet
-Leafpad
-Copernicium (for Chemistry)
-OMWeather
-Maep
